R\ufeffLPA boss Clint Newton<\/a> has criticised the handling of Ronald Volkman's shoulder injury<\/a>, with the talented young playmaker now in career limbo.<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old was granted an early release from the final two years of his deal with the Warriors<\/a> last month, \ufeffsigning with the Dragons<\/a> for the 2024 NRL<\/a> season.<\/p>\n

St George Illawarra announced the arrival of their new five-eighth on the club's official website, while also sharing images of Volkman training on social media.<\/p>\n

However, after medical examination \ufeffin the midst of pre-season, it was revealed Volkman required season-ending shoulder surgery, putting an end to his Red V dreams.<\/p>\n

The issue for Volkman and the club was that his contract was never registered with the \ufeffNRL, thus leaving him on the outer at the Dragons and potentially facing the prospect of footing the $50,000 bill for his operation.<\/p>\n

Speaking on SEN Radio, Newton discussed the "completely botched" nature of the saga and the next steps for Volkman's career.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"It's a unique situation and it's a pretty disappointing one as well," he told SEN 1170 Breakfast<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"When you go to work, you want to make sure you are properly protected and that those responsible for looking after you comply with their obligations. If they don't, they'll be held accountable and players aren't always given the respect they deserve.<\/p>\n

"The process of one player departing a club to join another should be pretty straightforward. Ronald's case has been completely jumbled up and botched.<\/p>\n

"The only person affected in this case is the player. No player should be left in the situation that they have to foot their own medical bills due to the fact they have sustained an injury performing their obligations to the club.<\/p>\n

"We are hopeful for a positive outcome."<\/p>\n

\ufeffAfter attending Waverley College and coming through the junior system at the Roosters, Volkman moved across the ditch to continue his career with the Warriors, featuring on five occasions in the top grade over the past two seasons.<\/p>\n

His move to the Dragons was seen as the perfect opportunity for Volkman to earn a consistent NRL spot, but that has gone up in smoke and he has now been left without a club and a highly uncertain future.<\/p>\n

Dragons coach Shane Flanagan denied the club were in the wrong<\/a>, but Newton claimed the blame could be placed in numerous directions. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"No player should be in a position where a termination occurs and several days go past before a player has a contract registered with the NRL," Newton said.<\/p>\n

"Many parties have played a role in this … we must ensure Ronald is protected.<\/p>\n

"I wouldn't have thought this would be required but there needs to be further communication in the industry to ensure that this never happens again."\ufeff<\/p>\n

After the failed recruitment of Volkman, it's now expected that Kyle Flanagan will don the No.6 jumper for the Saints, while reserve grade standout Jesse Marschke has signed a top 30 contract and will be pushing for a spot in the lineup.\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
