Andrey Rublev<\/a> pushed through the pain barrier to beat Alex de Minaur<\/a> in five sets on Sunday night – but the fifth seed admitted the "super tough" local hope took him to his limits in the fourth round of the Australian Open.<\/a><\/p>\n

The 26-year-old took the first set against the Aussie, but after dropping the next two \ufeffin tie-breakers, looked up against it in his bid to lock in a quarter-final berth.<\/p>\n

Rublev recovered in style, \ufeffhowever, dominating de Minaur towards the business end of their clash to secure an impressive 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 victory on Rod Laver Arena.<\/p>\n

During his post-match interview with Jim Courier on Nine\ufeff, the Russian star praised his opponent and explained his thought process during the difficult periods of the match.<\/p>\n

"I started to tell to myself 'you're going to die today but you will do everything' and somehow I started to play better and better," Rublev said.<\/p>\n

"I found more energy and I was able to win<\/p>\n

"He's one of the fastest players, the way he moves with the legs, and takes the speed, it's crazy. You could see it was super tough to play.<\/p>\n

"I start to feel a bit of pain there, but it's normal after four hours with intensity like this.<\/p>\n

"[I told myself] don't cry, don't start to feel sorry for yourself."<\/p>\n

Rublev will now take on fourth seed Jannik Sinner<\/a> on Tuesday in what promises to be one of the most entertaining fixtures of the tournament, with the Italian star in red-hot form after blowing past \ufeffKaren Khachanov in straight sets over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for de Minaur, his hopes of making a deep run into his home grand slam fell agonisingly short despite showing the best form of his career, admitting the power shown by Rublev in the latter sets was too big an obstacle to overcome.<\/p>\n

"Yeah, it's a tough match to finish up my campaign here," de Minaur said post-match.<\/p>\n

"Obviously I had aspirations for more … my time here was cut short.<\/p>\n

"Andrey deserved the win today. He played too good in the fourth and fifth sets. He kind of, in my eyes, just let go and started swinging freely, caught a little purple patch.<\/p>\n

"It's not a match that I thought I lost physically. It was just that the racquet was taken out of my hand. It got to a stage where I just could not get him moving or expose that movement. He was just standing and hitting from every single part of the court.<\/p>\n

"That's probably the most disappointing part of the whole match."<\/p>\n

De Minaur's exit from the tournament ends any hope of an Aussie reigning supreme in either the men's or women's singles draw at Melbourne Park\ufeff, however top-ranked mixed doubles pair Storm Hunter and Matthew Ebden remain in the hunt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
