Teenage phenom Coco Gauff<\/a> has revealed the sentiments behind the words printed on her tennis shoes at this year's Australian Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking courtside after her straight-sets victory over Magdalena Frech, Gauff was asked to explain the phrases on her colourful playing shoes.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI have a lot of things written on my shoes," she said.<\/p>\n

"One is, 'You can change the world with your racquet'. That is something that my dad has told me since I was a little girl and is an inspiration. It's why I always feel it is important to speak up and speak out about certain issues.<\/p>\n

"On my shoes are the coordinates to the park I grew up in in Florida. I grew up playing on public tennis courts at Pompeii Park. That is the coordinates on there.<\/p>\n

"I have my little brothers' names on the shoe, Cody and Cameron. I know they are at home. Cameron got MVP for his football team so I am super proud of you, Cam."<\/p>\n

Guaff explained that the words help her keep perspective when she becomes lost in the emotion of a match.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"Sometimes my mum thinks I am negative when I am holding my head down, but sometimes I am looking at my shoes as a reminder that life is much more than tennis and how I do out here on the court doesn't define me as a person," she said.<\/p>\n

"That goes for everyone \u2014 your work, whatever you do \u2014 doesn't define you as a person.<\/p>\n

"Surround yourself with good people. Everything I do on the court is a plus to my life. I have all that I need and this is all just extra."<\/p>\n

\ufeffEarlier in the tournament, Gauff's unique kit was linked to Serena Williams' attire at the 2016 Australian Open in what turned out to be a "fake tweet"<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gauff breezed past Frech 6-1, 6-2 to book her place in the quarter finals.<\/p>\n
