Teenage phenom Linda Noskova has upset the women's top seed Iga Swiatek<\/a> to progress to the fourth round in her first appearance at the Australian Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 17-year-old Czech \ufefffought back after dropping the opening set to defeat Swiatek 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 20 minutes.<\/p>\n

Her victory marks the earliest exit from the Australian Open for the women's top seed since Virginia Ruzici was sent packing in the first round in 1979.<\/p>\n

The defeat is also \ufeffSwiatek's earliest slam exit since her third-round defeat at the 2020 US Open.<\/p>\n

Having never made it further than the second round at a grand slam, \ufeffNoskova's career-best win blows open her side of the draw with only three seeded players remaining \u2014 none ranked in the top 10.<\/p>\n

Noskova carried out a big serving performance which hurt her in moments but her risk-taking and ability to stick tight to Swiatek paid dividends.<\/p>\n

Swiatek served out the opening set after Noskova took her foot off the peddle in its closing stage.<\/p>\n

She \ufeffextinguished an early scare from Noskova in game three, surviving two break points to hold serve, before emerging from a lengthy game with the break.<\/p>\n

The second set kept a steady pace until its midway point when Noskova went into another gear.<\/p>\n

Swiatek threatened to break in game five but then let up in game eight to gift Noskova the opportunity to serve out the set and equalise at one a piece.<\/p>\n

"Playing inspired tennis is the teenager,"\ufeff Peter Psaltis says in commentary for Nine.<\/p>\n

With the momentum in her favour, Noskova broke again to lead the deciding third set 2-1.<\/p>\n

Play was briefly stopped during the change of ends, allowing for an elderly woman to be attended to by paramedics. \ufeffThe woman was soon helped from the stands.<\/p>\n

Taking advantage of the \ufeffstoppage, Swiatek immediately broke back. However, Noskova regained the lead at 4-3 before consolidating the break.<\/p>\n

Swiatek took game eight but it was not enough to deny Noskova as she served out the match \u2014 Swiatek's return on a thunderous serve going long.<\/p>\n

"I'm speechless," Noskova said courtside.<\/p>\n

"Obviously I knew it was going to be an amazing match with the world number one, such an amazing player.<\/p>\n

"I didn't think that it would end up like this."<\/p>\n

Ranked 50th in the world, Noskova is the lowest-ranked woman to topple the No.1 seed at Melbourne Park since world No.81 Serena Williams clinched the title over Maria Sharapova in 2007.<\/p>\n

She is also the first teenager to defeat the world No.1 at the Australian Open since unseeded 19-year-old Amelie Mauresmo defeated Lindsay Davenport in the semifinals in 1999.<\/p>\n

Noskova will next play 19th seed Elina Svitolina in the fourth round on Monday.<\/p>\n

Women's singles draw state of play\ufeff<\/h2>\n

In the space of a day the Australian Open has lost two of the very best players in the women's singles draw. So who's left to keep an eye on?<\/p>\n

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (2) is now the top seed left standing\ufeff and she'll face American Amanda Anisimova in the fourth round.<\/p>\n

Another American, Coco Gauff (4), is the next best. She plays Magdalena Frech of Poland next.<\/p>\n

There's a valley between Gauff and the next best player Barbora Krejcikova (9) is the only other player inside the top 10 left. She'll take on 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva next.<\/p>\n

China's Qinwen Zheng (12) is on the brink of the top 10. Her next match is against Oceane Dodin of France.<\/p>\n

Swiatek (1), Elena Rybakina (3), Jessica Pegula (5), Ons Jabeur (6), Marketa Vondrousova (7), Maria Sakkari (8) and Beatriz Haddad Maia (10) have all gone home.<\/p>\n
