M\ufeffarcus Harris<\/a> has opened up on his omission from Australia's Test squad to face the West Indies<\/a>, admitting he "didn't really hear too much" from national selectors in the lead-up to the series.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe 31-year-old was one of many players in the mix to replace David Warner,<\/a> who called time on his Test career following the series whitewash against Pakistan earlier in the summer.<\/p>\n

Warner had given plenty of notice about his desire to bow out on his home turf in Sydney, giving George Bailey<\/a> and company plenty of time to deliberate over a suitable candidate to open the batting.<\/p>\n

However, according to Harris, the discussions between him and Bailey from The Ashes in mid-2023 until the recent announcement \ufeffwere almost non-existent.<\/p>\n

"We knew that Davey had put a timeline on when he wanted to finish, so there was obviously a lot of speculation about when he would finish and who would replace him and I was obviously one of the names in contention," he told Wide World Of Sports Radio.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

"What's good now is that now it has been decided and been done, it's one less thing I have to worry about.<\/p>\n

"It's been an interesting couple of months but at least I know now where I stand instead of battling with the unknown.<\/p>\n

"I didn't really hear too much around selection from them to be honest. I was with the squad in England and then I probably spoke to George before the PM's XI game.<\/p>\n

"They didn't say too much around selection, so I didn't really know anything until I got the phone call last week.<\/p>\n

"It's a little bit of the unknown which is frustrating, but that's the way it goes sometimes."<\/p>\n

Harris has a modest record in Test cricket, averaging 25.29 from 14 matches in the baggy green, with the left-hander making just three-half centuries for Australia.<\/p>\n

And while he is hopeful of a recall down the line, Harris is aware the ship may have sailed on his international tenure, especially given the decision to move Steve Smith to the top of the order to accommodate the return of Cameron Green<\/a> in the No.4 role.<\/p>\n

"I hope so – but it depends if they want to pick specialist opening batsman anymore or not," he said.<\/p>\n

"Time will tell I suppose. It's still a bit raw with the disappointment of selection, but things can change quickly.<\/p>\n

"I back myself to do a job, but it's up to selectors if they want to pick me or pick specialist opening batsmen anymore."\ufeff<\/p>\n
