Joe Schmidt described himself as "boring" and positioned himself \ufeffas a complete contrast to Eddie Jones after replacing him as Wallabies coach on Friday.<\/a><\/p>\n

The 58-year-old was officially unveiled at a press conference in Sydney as he begins the daunting task of lifting Australia up from ninth in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

Schmidt had a wildly successful tenure in charge of Ireland between 2013-19 and was also credited with spurring the All Blacks to the 2023 Rugby World Cup final through his sharp work as an assistant.<\/p>\n

The former schoolteacher \ufeffwas engaging during the 30 minute session with reporters at Allianz Stadium but Jones the headline grabber he is not.<\/p>\n

Schmidt, the third New Zealander to coach the Wallabies, is more in the dry Dave Rennie mould but fans won't mind if he can win a game or three.<\/p>\n

Jones left Australia in disarray after going 2-7 last year and then quitting to take a job with Japan.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I'm not great at selling dreams. Dreams are not tangible," Schmidt said.<\/p>\n

"I'm a pragmatic sort of individual, probably characterised as boring. So I don't have probably the charisma that Eddie has… one of the best ways to grow the interest is win games. People love to get along when they believe their team are going to be really competitive."<\/p>\n

Schmidt has only signed a two year deal with Rugby Australia as the 2025 \ufeffBritish and Lions tour looms as his major litmus test.<\/p>\n

He \ufeffdidn't rule out an extension through to the home 2027 World Cup if things were going well but his family life would come first.<\/p>\n

"It's pretty much public knowledge that I have a young man (son Luke) at home who suffers quite badly with epilepsy. And this job will take me away from the time that I'd sort of committed to pitching in and helping him out," Schmidt said.<\/p>\n

"So if we can get the job done over the next 18 months and we can get the momentum heading in the right direction, then I'll feel like I've done my part of it and I'll be happy to hand on if there are some Australian coaches that come through."<\/p>\n

That family situation means Schmidt will remain based in New Zealand during the Super Rugby season before relocating to Australia when the Wallabies come into camp.\ufeff<\/p>\n

His first assignment will be a home Test series against Wales in July.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I'm desperate for the Wallabies to be competitive and if I can help – that's why I'm here. I think the global rugby family is desperate for the Wallabies to be where they need to be."<\/p>\n

Like most of the rugby world, he could not believe his eyes last year in France as the Wallabies crashed to losses against Fiji and Wales in a historic pool exit.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The World Cup was not an Australian team that I recognised," Schmidt said.<\/p>\n

"And, yeah, I'm probably a little bit surprised that I'm here. I thought I'd retired when I went back to New Zealand but I'm very poor at doing that…<\/p>\n

"This is a really unique challenge, I think."<\/p>\n

Schmidt said he had spoken to Rennie before taking the job, as well as Wallabies assistant coaches of recent seasons.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"The consistent message is there's lots of work to do and I'm not afraid of trying to do the work. And so I'm a realist."<\/p>\n

Schmidt was flanked by RA chief executive Phil Waugh and new high performance boss Peter Horne, who he worked with at World Rugby.<\/p>\n

Horne led the recruitment process and was delighted to land arguably the hottest coaching free agent in the game.<\/p>\n

"Joe's got an international career that's well decorated, well documented, highly successful," Horne said.<\/p>\n

\"New<\/p>\n

"But the other thing that… you will get to know is Joe's a very, very caring individual and a great human that actually really endears himself into a team and brings players forward.<\/p>\n

"He cares about his staff, he cares about what he does."<\/p>\n

Horne then delivered what could be perceived as a shot at showman Jones.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"We're no longer about me, but we're about we," he said.<\/p>\n

"And we're going to be better as a group and build trust.<\/p>\n
