UPDATE:<\/strong> O\ufeffn the verge of tears after being broken for the second time in the third set, 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva found something from deep inside herself and pulled off an unthinkable 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5)<\/a> come-from-behind victory in the third round of the Australian Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trailing 5-1 in the decider at the pointy end of a topsy turvy match, Andreeva's eyes watered as she got up after slipping on the court, conceding what looked like the contest's decisive point. That came several games after she appeared to be at breaking point, literally bruising the skin on her arm, which she bit in frustration, after losing a deuce point down 2-0 early in the third set.<\/p>\n

She was on the canvas but, as it turned out, far from out for the count.<\/p>\n

While Nine commentator Sam Smith was explaining why "it's just not her day", the Russian knuckled down and worked her way back into the match, with her French opponent Diane Parry tightening up as she served to close it out.<\/p>\n

Andreeva broke for 2-5, then held for 3-5\ufeff, roaring as she clawed her way back and getting an excited crowd right behind her.<\/p>\n

"If she keeps that up over what's going to be a very long career, she won't have much voice left," Smith quipped.<\/p>\n

Even as she rode her emotions, the 16-year-old showed maturity far beyond her years \ufeffto stay engaged with the battle and by the time she'd forced a tiebreaker the result appeared inevitable.<\/p>\n

\ufeffAnd so it proved, with Andreeva sealing an enthralling comeback victory 10-5 in the match tiebreaker.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the media afterwards, Andreeva admitted it had been "a crazy match for me".<\/p>\n

"I didn't expect to come back but I did it so I'm very happy," she said.<\/p>\n

The 16-year-old explained that her comeback started with the mindset that she "wanted to win at least one more game" at 5-1 down in the decider\ufeff, "to not go 6-1, 1-6, 6-1".<\/p>\n

She achieved that goal and from there the ambition grew.<\/p>\n

"Then 5-2, she has match points. I'm going to the net. I'm thinking, Am I crazy? I'm going to the net on match point. But then she missed a ball," Andreeva continued.<\/p>\n

"I don't know, just the adrenaline, the desire, the feeling that I want to win. 5-3, I don't know, I tried to break her back. 30-love, then 30-all, I missed returns. I'm like, God, okay, that's it.<\/p>\n

"Then two crazy points. I don't know. I feel like when you're coming back from this score, it's kind of easy on a mental side for you. It's easier than for your opponent, for sure, because you're on the run, you're having all the adrenaline. That's what I had today.<\/p>\n

"(Then) 6-5, I lost my serve. It was like, okay, 6-all. I didn't think that's it. I already knew that I will win, but I just have to do everything for it.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

While Andreeva's self-confidence grew as the third set wore on, tennis great Sir Andy Murray<\/a> was baffled by some of the commentators who wrote her off when momentum turned against her in the third set.<\/p>\n

Murray, clearly watching the match, posted on X, formerly Twitter, criticising commentators who had questioned Andreeva's mental\ufeff strength due to the fact that she was showing visible signs of frustration.<\/p>\n

Murray said Andreeva may have benefited from being her own fiercest critic in the moment.<\/p>\n

Told of the three-time grand slam winner's interest in her match, Andreeva, a known fan of the 36-year-old, couldn't hide her delight.<\/p>\n

"Honestly I didn't really think that he would watch a match, then after he would tweet, he would comment something. Honestly, I will try to print it out somehow," she said.<\/p>\n

"I don't know, I will put it in a frame. I will bring it everywhere with me. I will maybe put it on the wall so I can see it every day (smiling).\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Then, responding directly to Murray's \ufeffanalysis, she added: "Maybe being harsh on myself actually helped me. I don't know. I just try to think positively. This harshness, let's say, helped me with it because I am not very positive in my head usually. I don't know. I just kept pushing myself. I was saying not good words to myself.<\/p>\n
