St George Illawarra Dragons<\/a> coach Shane Flanagan<\/a> has provided context around Ronald Volkman's failed medical, expressing his belief the player "would've known" about his shoulder injury.<\/p>\n

Volkman was released by the Warriors<\/a> to join the Dragons with the club announcing his signing before his contract was registered.<\/p>\n

Scans then revealed he would be ruled out for a year following much-needed surgery<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Dragons have come under fire for not doing their due diligence but Flanagan refuted that claim. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"Didn't we do our due diligence with scanning him properly\ufeff?," he said at a Dragons sponsor announcement.<\/p>\n

"Our physios and medical department checked him over, we did some drills with him and realised there wasn't something right.<\/p>\n

"We got scans, they're not cheap, we went and got them all and it was over a Christmas period, over a weekend.<\/p>\n

"As soon we got the scan results our medical department switched into gear and we realised there was a problem.<\/p>\n

"I feel terrible for the young bloke, he's got to have surgery but he did injure himself when he was at the Warriors so it's unfortunate … it wasn't ideal but in my 20 years at NRL level, I've never seen a player fail a medical so it's the first one we've had.<\/p>\n

"If they're coming to a club they haven't usually got an injury like that, it's a strange one and it doesn't happen often but we learn from it as a club."<\/p>\n

The new head coach was then asked if he believed Volkman knew about the injury and cautiously agreed. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"That's something you'd have to ask the player," he said.<\/p>\n

"I think he would've known \ufeffsomething wasn't right, his strength was down about 60 per cent on that side so I think he would've known.<\/p>\n

"I don't \ufeffthink he hid it, he's a really lovely young man, it's disappointing for him.<\/p>\n

"He wouldn't have known what the scans unfolded … you can't put too much blame on the young bloke. It's unfortunate."<\/p>\n

Volkman's manager Mario Tartak has previously revealed to Wide World of Sports that they will be seeking a third opinion from a Sydney doctor<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The half was set to partner Ben Hunt after Junior Amone's contract was deregistered by the NRL but is now in limbo with no contract and an imminent medical bill. \ufeff<\/p>\n
