Danielle Collins made a surprising retirement announcement after nearly stunning world No.1 Iga Swiatek<\/a> at the Australian Open on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The American led Swiatek 4-1 in the deciding third set before the Polish ace showed her class by peeling off five straight games to seal a \ufeff6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win in front of a riveted Rod Laver Arena.<\/p>\n

Collins is ranked 62nd in the world but reached the Australian Open final in 2022, losing to Ash Barty.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old beat Swiatek in the semi-finals that year.<\/p>\n

"This is going to be my last season, actually, competing," Collins revealed in her post-match press conference.<\/p>\n

"I don't really know exactly when, but this will be my last season and I'm really looking forward to that."<\/p>\n

Collins suffers from rheumatoid arthritis but showed against Swiatek that she still has the ability to trouble the very best.<\/p>\n

"I feel like I've had a pretty good career," she said.<\/p>\n

"There has certainly been ups and downs to it, and I think the travel and some of the things away from the court with scheduling and all of that, this is a really tough sport. I have other things that I'd kind of like to accomplish in my life outside of tennis, and would like to be able to… have the time to be able to do that. Obviously having kids is a big priority for me."<\/p>\n

Swiatek will now play Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic in the third round on Friday.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old boasts four grand slam titles but that 2022 semi against Collins is her best result in Melbourne.<\/p>\n

"Oh my God… honestly like, yeah, I was at the airport already," Swiatek said on Nine after her Houdini act.<\/p>\n

\"Australian<\/p>\n

"No – I want to fight till the end. I knew that she played just perfectly but it would be hard for anybody to keep that level. So I wanted to be ready when more mistakes are going to come from the other side. I'm really proud of myself because it wasn't easy."<\/p>\n

Swiatek also tried to downplay injury concerns over her strapped left knee.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I mean, it doesn't matter because I've been struggling a little bit with my knee since Cancun (WTA Finals in November). I have ups and downs but it's not like it impacts my game… you don't have to be worried because it's all good."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
