Olympic<\/a> champion Alexander Zverev<\/a> has shut down a question asked by a journalist at a fiery post-match press conference.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old is accused of assaulting a woman during an argument in Berlin<\/a> in May 2020. He has denied the allegations.<\/p>\n

When asked if he would attend the start of the trial in Germany later this year, he appeared to be insulted, telling the journalist: "Wow that's the question? I just played four hours and 40 minutes. It's not the first question I really wanna hear, to be honest."<\/p>\n

It was the only English speaking question asked at the press conference. \ufeff<\/p>\n

German news agency dpa reported Monday that the trial will start on May 31, which is during Roland-Garros.<\/p>\n

However, it cited a court spokesperson who said Zverev will not need to make a personal appearance and can be represented by a lawyer.<\/p>\n

A court in Berlin issued a penalty order in October ordering Zverev to pay fines amounting to 450,000 euros (AUD$748,000), but the player contested the ruling which meant the case went to trial instead.<\/p>\n

Penalty orders are used in Germany as a means of resolving some criminal cases without going to trial, if the suspect does not contest the order.<\/p>\n

Despite the upcoming case, Zverev is on the ATP's Player Council and intends to continue in that role.<\/p>\n

The world No.6 gave a similar answer at a previous press conference earlier this week, when he was asked whether it was appropriate to remain on the council.<\/p>\n

"Why would it not be?" he told another journalist.<\/p>\n

The men's tennis tour ruled last January that Zverev would not face disciplinary action, after its own investigation into domestic abuse allegations against him found "insufficient evidence" to substantiate the claims.<\/p>\n

Zverev will now enter the third round of the Australian Open following a tense match against Lukas Klein.<\/p>\n

Klein, who is ranked No.163 took two sets off the Olympic champion at a packed John Cain Arena.<\/p>\n

However \ufeffZverev's class came through in the end, overcoming the qualifier 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7).<\/p>\n
