The club also has decisions to make on captain Nic Maddinson, who fell out of favour in the back half of the summer, veteran Peter Siddle, and middle order maestro Jono Wells.

This trio, along with Mackenzie Harvey and Ruwantha Keelapotha, are out of contract. Expect significant squad changes at the Renegades, given just six players are contracted beyond this summer.

MELBOURNE STARS

The Stars are keen to lock in Marcus Stoinis to a multi-year deal before the embargo period commences next Wednesday.

Beyond that, players can't sign contracts, but can verbally agree to join franchises. Last year the Stars believed they had secured spinner Matt Kuhnemann from Brisbane Heat in principle, only for the left-armer to perform well in India and sign again for the Heat once the embargo period closed.

But believing they had locked Kuhnemann in – and then missing out on him, plus the departure of Adam Zampa – left the Stars without a frontline spinner this summer. It's understood this is an area they are keen to remedy across the winter.

Stoinis' decision looms large because of his value on the open market with the Lucknow Super Giants. If he signs on, the Stars will have locked in their allotted 10 players prior to the embargo period.

No club is permitted to sign more than 10 players for the following season before the final of the previous one commences. Batters Joe Burns and Nick Larkin are also out of contract, while quicks Brody Couch and Nathan Coulter-Nile are also without deals.

Spinner Corey Rochiccioli, who played one game for the Stars, is also out of contract. Coach Peter Moores is contracted for next season and even though the Stars missed finals this year, the feeling is the English coach fostered an excellent environment and will relish the chance to shape the remainder of the squad ahead of next summer.

OTHER BIG NAMES

For the next two summers, all Australian Men's Test players will in theory be available from the end of the Sydney Test until the end of January to play BBL.

This small window of opportunity will allow Cricket Australia to market the tournament with names such as Smith, Warner, Starc and Cummins.

As one club official told 9News Melbourne, how bold would the Melbourne Stars be if they lose Stoinis? Could they chase Warner? Could the Scorchers or Renegades lure Smith? Could the Heat bring in Cummins to bowl at the Gabba? And how good would it be if the Hurricanes, who missed finals in BBL 13, convinced Starc to sign with them?

<img data-id="6c41bfe0-aca9-4eb9-918c-987cdcf00da8" src="https://sportinfo.pro/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/6c41bfe0-aca9-4eb9-918c-987cdcf00da8" alt="Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc of Australia celebrates after the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup India 2023 Final between India and Australia at Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19, 2023 in Ahmedabad, India. Alex Carey and Travis Head (Strikers) are also out of contract, as are Chris Lynn (Strikers), Michael Neser (Heat), Andrew Tye (Scorchers), and Daniel Sams (Thunder).

OVERSEAS PLAYERS

Under the current system, more than $500,000 needs to be spent on two overseas players or more. Clubs can have a maximum of three overseas players. While player payments are public in the IPL and bands are well known in The Hundred, salaries are not as open in Australia.

Cricket Australia will use the embargo period to review contracting rules, draft operation and other key details ahead of BBL 14. Clubs are keen to select players in the draft who fulfil their commitments, though Cricket Australia does have insurance policies in place if they pull out late, as happened in September with Rashid Khan (Strikers) and Harry Brook (Stars).

<img data-id="2826cf38-b911-4f5c-9cea-3eae454c61c5"
