French qualifier Terence Atmane was reduced to tears after retiring from his first-round match against third seed Daniil Medvedev<\/a> with cramping.<\/p>\n

Atmane took the opening set off Medvedev 7-5 before the two-time Australian Open<\/a> finalist recovered to race out to a 3-0 lead in the second as Atmane began to show signs of struggle.<\/p>\n

The world No.132's cramps became unbearable in the third set with the pain limiting his movement and forcing him to serve underarm.<\/p>\n

In a dramatic sequence of events, Atmane was given a time violation before forfeiting a game to rest. He subsequently smashed his racquet and was given a code violation.<\/p>\n

After a run of four games with Atmane barely moving, his cramps began to subside. But by that stage, he had surrendered the third set 4-6.<\/p>\n

Atmane attempted to play out the fourth but was unable to continue.<\/p>\n

Contesting his first-ever grand slam singles draw, Atmane was visibly upset after making the decision to quit.<\/p>\n

Medvedev progressed to the second round via the retirement 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 0-1.<\/p>\n

At the net, the pair shared a nice moment with Medvedev telling Atmane in French: "If you keep playing like that, all the best tournaments are yours".<\/p>\n
