Australian Open<\/a> director Craig Tiley<\/a> has defended the decision to add an extra day to the schedule after receiving criticism over the late finish on Rod Laver Arena on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka<\/a> took to centre court at 11.41pm local time following a gruelling match between Novak Djokovic and Dino Prizmi<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It took Sabalenka 53 minutes to beat German Ella Seidel, finishing just after 12.30am.<\/p>\n

Speaking with Nine, Tiley said the late finish was inevitable.<\/p>\n

"We finished at 12.35am and we have taken the edge off having the possibility of late finishes," he said.<\/p>\n

"Nobody could predict that Novak would have gone over four hours to play a qualifier. No one would have predicted that putting a schedule on.<\/p>\n

"It's going to happen and it will happen again, it could happen tonight or tomorrow night."<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe governing body has faced criticism after announcing it would add an extra day of play to the 2024 Australian Open<\/a>, beginning this year's tournament on Sunday rather than Monday.<\/p>\n

It was hoped the extra day would help to avoid late match finishes, after Andy Murray and Thanasi Kokkinakis playing until after 4am at last year's Open.<\/p>\n

American tennis<\/a> great John McEnroe<\/a> has openly criticised the move, labelling the revised schedule as "cash grab"<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"First of all, it's a money grab as far as I'm concerned," McEnroe said on ESPN<\/em> last week.<\/p>\n

"They just found another way to make some money. I don't agree with it."<\/p>\n

Tiley however believed the extra day would instead benefit the players.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWhat we have at least done in event of (extreme) weather we have more options and we have the opportunity to ensure we can help the players by taking an extra day off going into Wednesday," Tiley continued.<\/p>\n

Australian tennis commentator and former player Jelena Dokic backed Tiley's comments.<\/p>\n

"It's a tough job and as a player, I myself didn't realise how much work goes into (scheduling)," she said.<\/p>\n

"I think yesterday we would have had an extra match in a day session if we had a two-day first round. We eliminated that and already we can hear from the players that we would have had a 3am or 4am finish and we didn't have that."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
