Less than 12 months after taking an indefinite break from professional tennis, citing \ufeffburnout and mental health battles, America's Amanda Anisimova won her comeback grand slam match at the Australian Open<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Featuring in her first grand slam match since the 2023 Australian Open, Anisimova progressed to the second round with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Russia's Liudmila Samsonova at Show Court Arena.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Her comeback may not have been possible without the discovery of an interest in painting.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI think finding things that I like outside tennis was a huge thing for me," Anisimova said in her on-court interview.<\/p>\n

"I'm not just a tennis player; I enjoy doing other things.<\/p>\n

"Being able to have a different passion and have the platform that I have to support great causes, like I do with my website … Hopefully I'll have more paintings when I come back because they're all sold out right now … But it's something that I've been enjoying doing and it makes me feel good knowing that it's going to a good resource."<\/p>\n

Anisimova's paints pieces of artwork, sells them through a website and donates some of the money to local organisations that combat mental health issues, hunger and child abuse.<\/p>\n

"It's become unbearable being at tennis tournaments," Anisimova wrote when she announced her break in May 2023.<\/p>\n

"At this point, my priority is my mental wellbeing and taking a break for some time.<\/p>\n

"I've worked as hard as I could to push through it."<\/p>\n
