Australian \ufeffChris O'Connell has progressed to the second round at the Australian Open<\/a> after defeating Chilean Cristian Garin in five sets despite a contentious call from the chair umpire.<\/p>\n

Needing four hours and 21 minutes, O'Connell triumphed over the world No.88 3-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.\ufeff<\/p>\n

O'Connell was left fuming at chair umpire Ana Carvalho after she interfered mid-point to call a double bounce on his shot.<\/p>\n

Leading 30-15 in the fourth game of the third set, \ufeff\ufeffO'Connell slid to return a slice from Garin before the chair umpire declared that Garin had won the point despite the ball landing in play.<\/p>\n

With the incident occurring directly underneath Carvalho's post, \ufeffO'Connell argued with Carvalho and called for her to review her decision.<\/p>\n

While there was no guarantee that O'Connell would have won the point as Garin could have made the return if not for the umpire's call, Garin received the point before going on to hold serve and win the game.<\/p>\n

\ufeffNine commentator Wally Masur immediately spotted the umpire error.<\/p>\n

"He got that, he got that," he said.<\/p>\n

As the replay played on the big screens, the crowd on Court 3 groaned in \ufeffdispleasure.<\/p>\n

\"Chris<\/p>\n

"He gets this. One bounce and he says, 'I was well under it. Easy'," Masur said.<\/p>\n

"That was an amazing call. It was right under her nose. Chris would be the fairest guy on tour. He is not a hustler. He got that well and truly."<\/p>\n

"It was shown on the screen because he pointed up to it. I think at the end of the day it's the chair's call and she's made a mistake," added Geoff Masters in commentary.<\/p>\n

Masur continued: " The chair doesn't have to do much these days. The lines do it all. You don't have to jump in.<\/p>\n

"I am not saying he was guaranteed to win the point, but he was in it. That's a tough call. Just a moment of exuberance from the umpire, just inserting herself into the match. He actually got there pretty easily in the end."<\/p>\n

Garin went on to claim the seesawing third set after winning the first.<\/p>\n

O'Connell also trailed in the second before securing a double break to level the match.<\/p>\n
