Italian tennis prodigy Jannik Sinner<\/a> has given some comical insight into his relationship with Australian coach Darren Cahill<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After beating Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round \u2013 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 \u2013 Sinner gave a cheeky response when asked about the AFL, pie-loving mentor.<\/p>\n

"Coaching a player is like a relationship, how do you make a personal connection with him?\u00a0You speak many languages, you're very sophisticated," said Nine commentator Wally Masur.<\/p>\n

"Darren's favourite pastime outside of tennis is Aussie rules football and eating meat pies."<\/p>\n

\"Sinner's<\/p>\n

Sinner replied, "We have a good relationship but we still be apart a little bit. For me, it's good to have him.<\/p>\n

"He gives a lot of confidence, a lot of calmness to the team and I think that's exactly what I need as a player and I think for the whole team is really, really good.<\/p>\n

"He's getting more Italian slowly so we try to teach him what kind of pasta is good to eat and what-not."<\/p>\n

Cahill, with a wry smile, gave a thumbs down in response followed by the Italian ma che vuoi \u2013 pursing his fingers together.<\/p>\n

Sinner didn't have it all his own way in the first round match-up.<\/p>\n

His Dutch opponent kept him honest throughout and threatened to steal a set away on several occasions.<\/p>\n

The pair were neck and neck through the first set before Sinner got the break and won it 6-4.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The second set was a far closer affair as they went point for point.<\/p>\n

Again, Sinner got the break and with it a 7-5 lead.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Unforced errors ultimately proved the difference between them.<\/p>\n
