Tennis great Andre Agassi<\/a> hopes Nick Kyrgios'<\/a> extended spell on the sidelines offers him "a chance to heal" his relationship with the game and rekindle his desire to win.<\/p>\n

Kyrgios hasn't played a grand slam since the quarter-final of the 2022 US Open<\/a>. Since then, he's battled several injuries to his ankle, knee, and most recently his wrist.<\/p>\n

Before the lay-off, the 28-year-old was enjoying the best results of his career.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He defeated Chile's Cristian Garin in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon<\/a> in 2022 before a walkover in the semi-final when Spanish legend Rafael Nadal<\/a> retired due to injury.<\/p>\n

Facing Novak Djokovic in the final, Kyrgios won the first set before conceding three in a row to lose 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).<\/p>\n

Kyrgios has spoken openly since about his future \u2013 and as injuries prevent him from continuing that purple patch, retirement continues to draw closer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Asked by Nine's Tony Jones if Kyrgios was a "wasted talent", Agassi offered a philosophical view.<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately we think we know more about people than we do. We never really know what's going on in their head and in their heart," said the four-time Australian Open winner.<\/p>\n

"I played a lot of years in this game where I was very disconnected with my own sense of purpose when I was out there.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"One thing I'll say about Nick, from the outside you definitely get what he's feeling regardless of what it is.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"He (has) definitely exposed the fact, his honesty with the game, or maybe his lack of desire, which hopefully gives him a chance to heal and hopefully tennis will benefit from him figuring out how to bring that talent back for our enjoyment."<\/p>\n

Kyrgios has said on the record that he sees retirement as a realistic possibility within a year or two amid a desire to go out on his own terms.<\/p>\n

"Like I would hate to have another surgery or anything like that. So I think I've still got the ability to have a good one to two years and then that's it," he told the On Purpose with Jay Shetty<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n
