N\ufeffick Kyrgios<\/a> has slammed "stupid" claims from tennis legend Pat Cash<\/a> regarding crowds at the Australian Open<\/a>, with the tournament set to kick off on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\ufeffDespite being sidelined due to injury, Kyrgios continues to remain a central figure in Australian tennis<\/a>, with fans across the country clamoring to see the Canberra native back on the court.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old has lit up the Australian Open in the past, highlighted by his rise to the doubles title in 2022 alongside close mate Thanasi Kokkinakis.<\/p>\n

Kyrgios has brought more eyes to the product, both in Australia and abroad – but according to Cash, \ufeffthe type of fans that have been present in recent years in Melbourne have turned some players off.<\/p>\n

"I think the Australian crowds in the last 10 years have got a little out of control," he said during a recent ABC documentary.<\/p>\n

"Cheer on your countrymen, no problems, but they're not representing your country, they're individual and I think we need to understand that.<\/p>\n

"We should have more respect for the international players that come over here. We've got to also accept that if it goes too far."<\/p>\n

Cash claimed that some players may refuse to play in the Australian Open if the boisterous nature of the crowd continues.<\/p>\n

However, it didn't take long for Kyrgios to bite back, with the sidelined superstar urging supporters to continue to become a bigger part of the sport. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"Absolutely stupid comment by another old head that has no idea how marketing or how things work in today's day and age … you need entertainment," he told Daily Mail Australia.<\/p>\n

"This generation doesn't have a long attention span. That's why you see clips on Instagram rolling. They're 15-20 seconds long.<\/p>\n

"Someone like Pat Cash wouldn't be able to grasp that concept.<\/p>\n

"I'm not taking anything away from Pat Cash – incredible player of his generation, but we need to continue to make the sport grow.<\/p>\n

"We need the crowds to feel part of the sport. We need entertainment. We need people having beers and the players loving it. We need human interaction. We're human, not robots."<\/p>\n

Cash and Kyrgios have been at loggerheads in the past, with the two Aussie stars failing to see eye-to-eye over a number of issues.<\/p>\n

The 58-year-old Cash won the prestigious Wimbledon event in 1987 – the same grand slam that produced Kyrgios' career-best effort – but neither man have been able to claim singles gold on home soil. \ufeff<\/p>\n
