T\ufeffhe selection battle for Australia<\/a> has ended for now – but there are still a plethora of young stars knocking on the door for a Test spot. Former captain Tim Paine<\/a> has revealed the two players capable of making the jump.<\/p>\n

After weeks of speculation, George Bailey<\/a> and his selection panel confirmed that Steve Smith<\/a> will step into the opening role for the upcoming West Indies<\/a> series, replacing the recently-retired David Warner<\/a>, while all-rounder Cameron Green has earned a recall.<\/p>\n

Cameron Bancroft<\/a> is considered the unlucky man to miss out on a spot in the squad, after selectors opted to lean towards Matt Renshaw as the back-up batter and pushed Smith into an unfamiliar position.<\/p>\n

However, in the midst of the Sheffield Shield<\/a> break, two potential bolters have put their hands up through their Big Bash<\/a> performances, as the governing body continue to deal with the rise of T20 cricket and using that as a gateway into the red-ball format.<\/p>\n

Speaking on SEN Radio on Thursday morning, Paine – who captained the Test side from 2018 to 2021 and is now an assistant coach at the Adelaide Strikers – mounted a case for the BBL's leading run-scorer Matt Short to potentially earn selection in the future.<\/p>\n

"Absolutely – I can't see why not," Paine said.<\/p>\n

"Shorty's work for me, up close and personal, has been super impressive.<\/p>\n

"He's dominating this competition at the moment, he's leading from the front \u2026 he's certainly been the standout player of the tournament.<\/p>\n

\"Matt<\/p>\n

"He can bat anywhere in an order I'd imagine in red-ball cricket, he's a gun in the field and he can give you some handy off-spin as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I think he's gonna play a lot of cricket for Australia in all three formats going forward."<\/p>\n

Short has amassed \ufeff396 runs in seven matches for the Adelaide Strikers at an eye-catching average of 66, forcing his way into Australia's ODI squad for their upcoming fixtures against the Windies.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old possesses a \ufeffsolid record in first-class cricket, averaging in the mid-30s for Victoria, but presents another case of the evolving pathway for professional cricketers from white-ball success to Test selection.<\/p>\n

Paine also highlighted another impressive star on the rise – and it's one name that has been on the radar of national selectors for many years.<\/p>\n

"There's a few guys we've seen through the Big Bash who could come through the system into Test cricket," he said.<\/p>\n

"There's another one at the Melbourne Renegades who I think has got the ability to do it in Jake Fraser-McGurk."<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old has been in scintillating form in the BBL \ufeffand already has 13 first-class appearances to his name, scoring a century for Victoria and showing plenty of promise.<\/p>\n

Fraser-McGurk was earmarked for big things when he made his Shield debut at the age of 17, scoring a fifty on debut, before breaking the all-time List A record<\/a> this past October, blasting a century off just 29 deliveries in the Marsh One-Day Cup and surpassing South African legend AB de Villiers.<\/p>\n

Along with the two names presented by Paine, the likes of Aaron Hardie and Nathan McSweeney have been building strong Shield records, while recent NSW teenage debutant Sam Konstas and the big-hitting Ollie Davies are both exciting raw talents with plenty of future upside.<\/p>\n

From a bowling perspective, young spinner Tanveer Sangha already has international experience in white-ball cricket and has made a successful return from injury, while Tasmanian quick Lawrence Neil-Smith and \ufeffVictorian all-rounder Will Sutherland could also be future green and gold representatives in any format.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
