Pete Carroll will finish up as Seattle Seahawks<\/a> head coach after 14 seasons, with the veteran Super Bowl<\/a> winner set to move into an advisory role with the franchise.<\/p>\n

The 72-year old has been at the forefront of the organisation since 2010, leading them to the side's only NFL<\/a> title in 2014 with the likes of Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch and Richard Sherman starring in the 43-8 demolition of the Denver Broncos.<\/p>\n

Seattle missed the playoffs despite a 21-20 win at Arizona on Monday (AEDT), but their previous round loss to Pittsburgh ultimately sealed their postseason fate.<\/p>\n

The club announced the news on Thursday morning and will now begin a rebuilding phase, with Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn the early front-runner to step into the now-vacant position.<\/p>\n

Carroll will step aside as the most successful coach in franchise history, but with an unsatisfactory conclusion after several seasons of middling results despite lifting the Lombardi Trophy less than a decade ago.<\/p>\n

The franchise unfortunately never fully recovered from what happened in the Super Bowl a year later, with Russell Wilson\u2019s infamous goal-line interception in the final seconds against the Patriots leading to a lengthy period of mixed results.<\/p>\n

Carroll's tenure finished with a regular season record of 137-69-1, leading the Seahawks to five NFC West titles and 10 playoff victories, but hadn't made it past the divisional round since their lone title triumph.<\/p>\n

Carroll himself sounded frustrated going into Week 18 about how this season had gone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a lot of work to do, but the outlook for the future is very positive, because of the makeup of the guys, the way they want to work, the way they go about it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

"They just need to be trained and it needs to come back another year where you see all of those guys that make that jump from year one to year two and from year two to year three. There\u2019s going to be a real positive movement for our club.\u201d<\/p>\n

That future for Seattle will be under the watch of a different coach, though.<\/p>\n

Despite a lacklustre final chapter, Carroll\u2019s tenure in Seattle will be viewed as the most successful run since the franchise arrived in 1976. He ushered in a player-friendly environment built around allowing personalities to show within the defined structure of his system. Carroll preached competition, but made it fun along the way.<\/p>\n

Seattle are now the seventh NFL team looking for a new coach, joining Tennessee, Atlanta and Washington who have fired coaches since the regular season ended, while Raiders, Chargers and Panthers made mid-season personnel changes.<\/p>\n

Speculation will immediately turn to Quinn, who served in the same defensive coordinator role for the Seahawks during their two NFC championship seasons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
