Larger-than-life Formula 1<\/a> team boss Guenther Steiner has been sacked by American outfit Haas over an apparent disagreement with the squad's eponymous owner.<\/p>\n

Steiner, who rose to prominence thanks to Netflix and its Drive To Survive<\/em> docuseries, led Haas from its inception as the team principal and built it from the ground up.<\/p>\n

In the eight seasons to date since debuting in 2016, Haas has endured a rollercoaster ride.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The team peaked in only its third season, finishing fifth in the 2018 constructors' championship with Frenchman Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen of Denmark.<\/p>\n

However, the team hasn't been able to replicate that success and has finished last or second-to-last in the championship in four of the five seasons since.<\/p>\n

According to several reports, Steiner and team owner Gene Haas did not share the same vision for the team moving forward.<\/p>\n

"I'd like to start by extending my thanks to Guenther Steiner for all his hard work over the past decade and I wish him well for the future," said Haas.<\/p>\n

"Moving forward as an organisation it was clear we need to improve our on-track performances.<\/p>\n

"In appointing Ayao Komatsu as team principal we fundamentally have engineering at the heart of our management.<\/p>\n

"We have had some successes, but we need to be consistent in delivering results that help us reach our wider goals as an organisation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We need to be efficient with the resources we have but improving our design and engineering capability is key to our success as a team.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I'm looking forward to working with Ayao and fundamentally ensuring that we maximise our potential \u2013 this truly reflects my desire to compete properly in Formula 1."<\/p>\n

Director of engineering Ayao Komatsu will step up and take the reins as team principal with immediate effect.<\/p>\n

Komatsu has more than 20 years in F1 having worked with the likes of Honda and Renault.<\/p>\n

Notably, Steiner was not quoted in the team's press release and did not get to farewell the team.<\/p>\n

"Always significant when the departing person is not quoted in the press release, tells you there's friction, suspect we'll hear more about this," ex-Formula 1 driver turned Sky Sports F1 commentator Martin Brundle wrote on social media.<\/p>\n

"The team hasn't progressed in recent seasons, but hard to know exactly why without being on the inside. Good luck Guenther. And Haas."<\/p>\n

Damon Hill suggested distractions off-track including the Drive To Survive<\/em> series, a book, and more television appearances weren't to Haas' liking.<\/p>\n

"Geunther became a bit of a celebrity thanks to the famous Netflix series and the behind-the-scenes filming of him," said the 1996 Formula 1 champion and Sky Sports F1 commentator.<\/p>\n

"He is absolutely a huge character \u2013 very decisive, very confident, and very sure of what he's saying. Maybe this is part of the mix. He wants to win.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I don't know what the real reason is for the departure but it's a big loss to the sport because fans like him, he attracted people, he was controversial, he was outspoken.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Maybe he didn't get the results that Gene Haas wanted."<\/p>\n

On the same day that Steiner was axed, it was also confirmed technical director Simone Resta had left the team.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Haas finished last in the constructors' championship in 2023. Nico Hulkenberg finished 16th in the drivers' championship ahead of teammate Magnussen in 19th.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
