Australian tennis<\/a> commentator and former player Jelena Dokic<\/a> has been forced to abandon her commentary duties at the Adelaide International<\/a> after contracting a viral infection.<\/p>\n

Announcing the news on her social media, Dokic\ufeff said all of her commitments in Adelaide, which included a signing for her new book Fearless<\/em><\/a>, had been cancelled with the 40-year-old to return to Melbourne ahead of next week's Australian Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"Sorry Adelaide but I have to leave," \ufeffshe wrote on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

"I have come down with a viral infection and I have to leave and get back home to Melbourne ASAP.<\/p>\n

"I am so sad and disappointed as I absolutely love Adelaide and this amazing tournament but I have no choice."<\/p>\n

Returning to Melbourne for treatment, \ufeffDokic was hopeful she would be fit to commentate the Australian Open for Nine from Sunday.<\/p>\n

"Hopefully I will be OK soon and by Sunday for the start of the Australian Open. Fingers crossed," she wrote.<\/p>\n

In a separate post, \ufeffDokic also thanked her South Australian fans for her support and apologised to those who had signed up to attend her book tour.<\/p>\n

"I apologise to all my supporters in Adelaide because we had a book signing on Saturday … and I know many of you were signed up for this and were really looking forward to this, just like me," she wrote.<\/p>\n

Dokic retired from professional tennis in 2014, closing the door on a sparkling career that included reaching the quarter finals at Wimbledon in 1999 at just 16 years of age, six singles titles and a career-high ranking of world No.4.<\/p>\n
