Imagine if the NRL<\/a> switched to a smaller, lighter ball or the Big Bash League<\/a> mandated five-inch thick bats \u2013 all midway through the season. That's essentially what IndyCar<\/a> is doing in 2024 when it introduces hybrid power after the Indianapolis 500<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hybridisation has long been in the pipeline for IndyCar and has been repeatedly delayed due to issues pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic and supply.<\/p>\n

The full field of Chevrolet- and Honda-powered cars were set to be fitted with the system in time for the start of the 2024 season.<\/p>\n

However, the decision has been made for the cars to be equipped some time after the famed 500-mile race.<\/p>\n

That's despite extensive testing with more than 24,000km completed at various circuits across different teams.<\/p>\n

IndyCar organisers remain confident it won't be a wildcard for teams and drivers. However, Team Penske pilot Scott McLaughlin<\/a> reckons it'll be a curveball.<\/p>\n

"A big emphasis for us to start the year is to start strong because we know it's going to be a bit of a wildcard when the hybrids enter, whether that's from a reliability standpoint \u2013 things that are out of your control," McLaughlin told SENZ.<\/p>\n

"It's really important that we get on top of things while we know the car and then when we hit the hybrid side of the season we can hit the ground running.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's sad that we're starting the season without the hybrid, but at the same time it's the right thing competitively for the series, for the supply chain and whatnot right now trying to get the MGUs and a few things, the batteries, sorted for the cars.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's been quite difficult so I think the category is doing the right thing, it's just that unfortunately we're going to do it halfway through the season but it's going to put a bit of a spin on things that not many people will know what will happen."<\/p>\n

The hybrid system is made up of an MGU (Motor Generator Unit) and ESS (Energy Storage System) fitted between the engine and the gearbox.<\/p>\n

Exactly how drivers will be able to use the hybrid system is yet to be determined, although it can be used in addition to the push-to-pass which already gives drivers extra horsepower.<\/p>\n

The deployment of hybrid energy can be used automatically or manually depending on what IndyCar Series officials decide.<\/p>\n

"It's interesting for the drivers," said McLaughlin.<\/p>\n

"You've got to think about a few things, different corners, how the hybrid kicks in and how it reacts \u2013 off throttle, with brakes.<\/p>\n

"All the energy is generated when you're off-throttle or on the brake, so trying to figure that out and when you deploy it is another thing as well. So we're going to have that, plus the push-to-pass.<\/p>\n

"There's going to be quite a bit more power and we're certainly going to have to think about how you drive that power, especially in qualifying laps and throughout the race."<\/p>\n
