Former Test<\/a> captain Ian Chappell<\/a> says any lingering bad blood between Cameron Bancroft<\/a> and teammates should not factor into his recall to the Australian squad.<\/p>\n

The West Australian batter is a leading contender to be named as David Warner<\/a>'s replacement at the top of the order for next week's match against the West Indies.<\/p>\n

\ufeffBut while Bancroft's numbers in Shield cricket in recent times dwarf those of the other candidates, his involvement in the ugly 2018 ball-tampering scandal hangs heavy over his potential selection.<\/p>\n

And it is his relationship with the Aussie bowling group that is in the spotlight ahead of a likely return to the national set-up.<\/p>\n

After being banned – alongside Warner and Steve Smith – for Sandpapergate in 2018, Bancroft suggested Australia's bowlers knew the condition of the ball was being altered by him in the field.<\/p>\n

The bowling quartet – Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Nathan Lyon – then released a joint statement denying any knowledge it was happening before Bancroft was busted by South African television cameras.<\/p>\n

When quizzed about his relationship with those four over the weekend, Bancroft said he has "moved past it" and believes "it wouldn't be an issue if I came into the environment".<\/p>\n

While Chappell says the public can only take Bancroft – and the other Test players – at face value, any personal issue between them shouldn't impact his selection anyway.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffYou've really got to rely on Cameron Bancroft and the bowlers. I'm not there, I'm not part of the dressing room, and unless you're part of the dressing room you're not going to know that," Chappell said.<\/p>\n

"Firstly, if anybody thinks – as Steve Waugh suggested – that all 16 players in a touring party really like each other, then they believe in Santa Clause and the Easter bunny, because it just doesn't happen.<\/p>\n

"You've got 16 different personalities, some are going to get on and some aren't.<\/p>\n

"All I ever asked as a captain was that people respect what I was doing. I didn't expect invitations to their 21sts or their weddings.<\/p>\n

"Some people obviously I got on well with. But the main thing was that they respected me and respected the decisions, and that included selection."<\/p>\n

If selectors do pick Warner's replacement purely on form at Sheffield Shield level, Bancroft appears a shoo-in.<\/p>\n

In six Shield matches this season he has scored 512 runs at 56.88 for Western Australia\ufeff, including two centuries.<\/p>\n

Chappell would rather Test selectors focus on form with the bat, rather than personality off the field.<\/p>\n

"All I ever needed to know was can (the player) score 100, or can he get five wickets? And if the answer to that was yes, he was in the team," Chappell said.<\/p>\n

"If there was a problem personality wise it was my job as a captain to make sure that worked.<\/p>\n

"If you ask if I think personality has affected selection, I think it definitely has at different points."<\/p>\n
