Olympic<\/a> judges\ufeff won't be made to spring along a balance beam before Simone Biles<\/a> competes in Paris, nor will they have to trade blows in the boxing ring before Harry Garside<\/a> throws fists.<\/p>\n

But before breakdancers hit the dance floor, those assigned to judging breaking on its Olympic debut will have to bust out moves of their own.<\/p>\n

Anna Meares<\/a>, the Australian Olympic team<\/a>'s chef de mission for Paris 2024<\/a>, noted the quirk on Nine's Today\ufeff<\/em> and chuckled at the thought of diving judges leaping off a diving board.<\/p>\n

Australia's top "b-girl", university lecturer Rachael Gunn<\/a>, says judges being put in the spotlight is known as a "judges showcase".<\/p>\n

"They call it a celebration of hip hop, and at the Oceania Championships [in October] it wasn't only the judges that got down; the MCs did as well because they're also breakers. So it's quite a fun moment," Gunn told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"That it's a celebration of the culture and we've got this moment that marks that we are all part of this culture, we are all dancers, we are all contributing \u2014 it's significant in that sense."<\/p>\n

Gunn says judges showcases also play a role in encouraging judges to modernise.<\/p>\n

The sport has changed dramatically since originating in the Bronx, New York City in the 1970s.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Breaking constantly evolves so you want to see that people are still active," Gunn explained.<\/p>\n

"It's not like people are still doing the same things that they were doing 10 years ago or 20 years ago. The dance is constantly evolving so you want to see judges that are still actively breaking; otherwise, they're out of the loop … It's important for us to see that they're still active as much as possible … It's part of the culture."<\/p>\n

Breaking in Paris will see 16 b-boys and 16 b-girls face off in solo battles at the Place de la Concorde\ufeff, an urban park that's also set to host skateboarding, BMX freestyle and 3×3 basketball.<\/p>\n

Gunn and teen sensation Jeff Dunne, also known as "J-Attack", qualified for Paris 2024 by taking victory at the Oceania Championships, and there's still room for another b-girl and b-boy to snag tickets to the French capital.<\/p>\n

Breakers are judged on creativity, personality, technique, variety, performativity and musicality.<\/p>\n

"It's helpful in one way because you see their particular repertoire, their approach," Gunn said of judges showcases.<\/p>\n

"There are so many different approaches in breaking; you can really specialise in footwork or you can really specialise in power or you can really specialise in style, so it's nice to get a sense of who the judges are and the variety or what's the dominant thing emerging on the panel. Sometimes that can help you get a sense of what they're looking for, but also sometimes it doesn't."<\/p>\n

Gunn is expecting the Olympic breaking competition to be a hit.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI think it's going to be awesome. I think there are definitely going to be some positive vibes around it, I think the crowd's going to be really excited … and I think the judges showcases are going to lead to a really energetic, dynamic start to the event," Gunn said.<\/p>\n
