Reserve quarterback Jameis Winston and New Orleans capped off a convincing week 18 victory with an aggressive play call, defying the orders of their own coaches and upsetting rivals Atlanta during the final round of the NFL<\/a> season.<\/p>\n

Leading 41-17 with just over one minute remaining, the Saints lined up in \u201cvictory formation" \u2014 indicating Winston intended to take a knee to run out the clock \u2014 but surprisingly handed the ball off to Jamaal Williams for a one-yard touchdown.<\/p>\n

As the game ended, Saints coach Dennis Allen apologised on the field to Falcons coach Arthur Smith, who did not appear to accept that apology initially.<\/p>\n

Allen explained during post-game interviews that Saints coaches called for the offence to run out the clock, but they were overruled by the players on the field.<\/p>\n

"That's not who we are, not how we operate," he said in his press conference.<\/p>\n

"We should've taken a knee. I want to apologise for that… they asked me about getting Jamaal a touchdown at the end.<\/p>\n

"I said I wanted to take a knee, we put victory out there, the guys wanted to give Jamaal a touchdown and they did that on their own. It's unacceptable."<\/p>\n

Winston defended the decision to give Williams his first touchdown of the season, with both franchises missing out on the playoffs.<\/p>\n

"My intention was to lead the team that I\u2019ve been with the entire year and we made a collective decision," he said post-game.<\/p>\n

"We wanted to get one of our guys that they fight with \u2014 blood, sweat and tears, every game \u2014 in the end zone. I'm going to feel good about that."<\/p>\n

Falcons head coach Smith could clearly be seen angrily questioning Allen about the late touchdown on the field, but shied away from the issue in his official media address.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey can do whatever they want. There are no rules against it," he said.<\/p>\n

"We didn\u2019t stop them the second half, and they can do whatever they want. It is what it is. That\u2019s their prerogative. It\u2019s also my prerogative to tell him how I feel.<\/p>\n

"They can do whatever they want there.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the final-minute chaos, starting quarterback Derek Carr was on the sidelines, which saw Winston enter the game in the playmaking role, extending the win to 48-17.<\/p>\n
