T\ufeffhe doubles IQ of Laura Siegemund along with the power and endurance of Alexander Zverev<\/a> has proved the perfect combination in Germany's United Cup<\/a> final win.<\/p>\n

The tie against Poland came down to the mixed doubles after Iga Swiatek<\/a> won the women's singles match and Zverev claimed victory in the men's.<\/p>\n

A third set tie-breaker spilt both countries in the mixed doubles with the final score 6-4, 5-7, 10-4<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"It was \ufeffindescriptive, went down to the wire, but a brilliant comeback from Team Germany," former British No.1 Sam Smith said on Nine's commentary.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffAnd that truly is heartbreak for the Poles who came so close."<\/p>\n

The win for Germany is made even more incredible considering their semi-final against Australia went until 2:20am<\/a> with Zverev not going to sleep until 5:45am. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"They deserved it, they really did, Zverev was a mighty warrior … right through \ufeffthe whole event, particularly the last few days he stood up big time," Australian tennis legend John Fitzgerald said.<\/p>\n

The tie started perfectly for Poland with world No.1 Iga Swiatek defeating Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-0.<\/p>\n

Zverev then evened up the fixture against Hubert Hurkacz but had to come back from a first-set deficit with the final score 6(3)-7, 7-6(6), 6-4\ufeff.<\/p>\n

Then the epic mixed doubles decider went Germany's way \ufeffafter Poland couldn't return Zverev's hit at the net.<\/p>\n

Post-match, the importance of the fixture was seen on the face of Swiatek who sat emotional in her team's box.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"You can tell what it meant\ufeff, there's the No.1 player there, with a tear or two I think," Fitzgerald said.<\/p>\n

"That was a big loss for Poland and a mighty big win for Germany there.<\/p>\n

"No one can deny, for me, they deserved to win that,\ufeff they were pushing hard for the last 24 hours in both matches."<\/p>\n

Post-match, Zverev described the result as "a matter of millimetres" and credited Swiatek's performance stating "having you on a team is like having a cheat code".<\/p>\n

The world No.7 went on to heap praise on his team after a gruelling campaign.<\/p>\n

"Thank you everybody for coming to the United Cup, thank you to the guys \ufeffwho also didn't play in the United Cup," he said.<\/p>\n

"You guys had as big a role to play, supporting from the bench for the last 10 days, it's been absolutely amazing, it's been a pleasure and it's been so much fun for everybody to be apart of this team, especially for me."\ufeff<\/p>\n
