Already a bona-fide cricket<\/a> legend, Ellyse Perry<\/a> will make history again when she steps onto the field on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

Australia<\/a>'s second T20 \ufeffagainst India<\/a> in Mumbai will be Perry's 300th international appearance across all formats.<\/p>\n

The 33-year-old will become just the fourth woman to achieve the feat, joining retired legends Mithali Raj (333 games) of India and Charlotte Edwards (309) of England, and Silver Ferns veteran Suzie Bates (309).<\/p>\n

Perry has been a part of eight World Cup triumphs \u2013 two in the 50-over format, and all six of Australia's T20 World Cup successes.<\/p>\n

At an individual level, she was the first player to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in T20Is.<\/p>\n

She also holds the record for the highest score by an Australian woman in Test matches (213 not out), and was the third player to claim 150 wickets in women's ODIs.<\/p>\n

Speaking in Mumbai ahead of Australia's second ODI against India, Perry admitted the milestone had crept up on her, but said it offered "a nice chance to reflect".<\/p>\n

"Mainly in the sense of how incredibly fortunate I've been \u2026 being involved with the team and playing a sport that I truly love playing," she said.<\/p>\n

"But I think probably one of the biggest things that I've reflected on over the last couple of days is just where it all started, in the backyard with my dad and my older brother, and then some of the incredible lifelong mates that I made playing school and club cricket when I was a kid.<\/p>\n

"Somehow, miraculously, that's turned into a career that I've had for a long period of time and some amazing experiences and opportunities representing my country.<\/p>\n

"Whether that was one game or 299, I'm incredibly grateful for how it has transpired."<\/p>\n

Perry made her international debut against New Zealand in an ODI in Darwin in 2007 aged just 16. She took 2-37 and scored 19.<\/p>\n

From there, Perry enjoyed a meteoric rise to become one of the most recognisable figures in Australian sport \u2013 particularly in her teens as a dual international when she also played for the Matildas.<\/p>\n

Perry's popularity has been a key reason for the significant increase in the popularity of women's cricket in Australia and also for the sport's rapid development across the world.<\/p>\n

But as that rapid development continues, Perry has faced fresh challenges as she moves into a phase as an elder of the game.<\/p>\n

Having had a golden run of form and fitness throughout the first decade of her career, she tore her hamstring off the bone during Australia's victorious T20 World Cup campaign on home soil in 2020.<\/p>\n

Then, a stress fracture in her back kept her sidelined from the 2022 World Cup final.<\/p>\n

And when she has been fit, Perry has at times struggled with her own form \u2013 particularly in the shortest form of the game, which dominates the women's calendar.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She was dropped on merit from the side for the T20 leg of the multi-format Ashes series in 2022, and found herself carrying the drinks as Australia won the inaugural gold medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which featured the T20 format.<\/p>\n

But since then, she's worked hard to hone her T20 skills, and has now returned to top form.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She's even been nominated for the ICC's T20 player of the year award.<\/p>\n

When asked if her T20 transformation was a point of pride, she gave a typically humble response.<\/p>\n

"To be honest, I think from a bigger picture point of view, I've just had so much pride and joy in being involved in the team for the period of time that I have (which has been) such an influential time in women's sport as well," she said.<\/p>\n

"To see the progress that's taking place in that period has been truly amazing.<\/p>\n

"From a personal point of view, with that has come different challenges and different opportunities to get better and keep trying to evolve the way that I play.<\/p>\n

"From the last 18 months point of view, that's just been part of it and I've really enjoyed that challenge \u2013 but I think I've probably got a lot more pride in just having the opportunity to be a part of this team for as long as I have."<\/p>\n

Perry will this season begin her 18th year playing at the top level, and she said she had no plans to retire any time soon.<\/p>\n

She says not only is 400 matches a realistic goal, she also hopes to still be a part of the Australian team when cricket returns to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.<\/p>\n

"I'm very much open to whatever pans out in the next little bit for me," Perry said.<\/p>\n

"I'm absolutely loving the opportunity to be a part of this group still, and I think if I'm in the same phase as I am at the moment, then I'd love to play 400.<\/p>\n

\"Ellyse<\/p>\n

"But I don't think any of us have a crystal ball either, so if that doesn't pan out as well, then I've more than had my fair share of amazing experiences with this group.<\/p>\n

"I think that's just another number, but for as long as I can contribute to the team, and it's something that I find really motivating and enjoyable, I'd love to be here."<\/p>\n
