World No.55 Jordan Thompson<\/a> has shocked Rafael Nadal<\/a> at the Brisbane International<\/a>, defeating him in a three-hour thriller.<\/p>\n

The Australian lost the first set but went on to claim victory 5-7, 7-6, 6-3<\/a> in an enthralling contest.<\/p>\n

It's a major setback for Nadal who has fallen significantly in the world rankings due to a hip injury, which played havoc during the third set when he took a medical timeout.<\/p>\n

The 37-year-old started strong in the first set but Thompson's determination was clear from the outset, breaking Nadal's serve at 4-3.<\/p>\n

Thompson's second set was even more impressive but he had to save match points for Nadal to win in a tie-breaker.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe third set put even more momentum in Thompson's favour, as he led 4-1 before Nadal went away from the court for the timeout.<\/p>\n

It didn't impact the game too much with the Aussie \ufeffclaiming a stunning victory after Nadal hit a shot long in an epic final rally.<\/p>\n

Thompson credited the fans who stayed late in the night for his win. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"Thanks everyone for sticking around, you guys got me through, that was something special," \ufeffhe said on Nine's coverage.<\/p>\n

Match point in the third set wasn't a walk in the park for Thompson either, having to contend with two noises coming from a train during the rally.<\/p>\n

"I think that train needed some WD-40 the whole match … but too big of a point not to concentrate," he laughed.<\/p>\n
