David Warner<\/a> was instructed by coaches and staff to sledge and get under the skin of opposing teams, his opening partner Usman Khawaja<\/a> has revealed.<\/p>\n

As the pair play their final match together, Khawaja said he was thrilled to see fans "getting around" Warner's farewell after years as a villain in the eyes of the Australian<\/a> public.<\/p>\n

Speaking after bad light and rain brought about an early end to day two in Sydney<\/a>, Khawaja said Warner deserved to be sent off in style.<\/p>\n

"For a long period of time he was in people's faces and doing stuff, but that wasn't always Davey," he said.<\/p>\n

\"David<\/p>\n

"He was also getting told to play a certain way by the coaching staff, by the people around at certain points.<\/p>\n

"Back in the day \u2026 if coaches or senior players asked him to get into the contest and sledge other teams, he'd do it.<\/p>\n

"He's such a team player, if you ask him to do something he'll do it for the team and that's the frustrating part when people come at him.<\/p>\n

"He always put himself out there and he's always put himself second and put the team first.<\/p>\n

\"David<\/p>\n

"He doesn't have to do it, but he wants to because he wants to help the team and that's how he felt like he had to help the team."<\/p>\n

Warner served a 12-month ban for his part in the 2018 Sandpapergate scandal, during which time he performed significant community work at a grassroots level, and also returned to club cricket.<\/p>\n

Khawaja said the public "saw a very different Davey Warner" following that suspension.<\/p>\n

"He's been great \u2026 he's scored runs, he's done it his own way, he's played the game in a really good way," he said.<\/p>\n

"He's enjoyed it, you can tell he's smiling a lot on the field, he's doing it David Warner's way which is really good to see in the last half of his career."<\/p>\n

Although the pair more or less grew up batting together, their opening partnership wasn't forged properly until the 2020-2021 Ashes series \u2013 by which time both were well into the twilight of their careers.<\/p>\n

Khawaja said walking out to bat with his mate for the last time will be a sad moment.<\/p>\n

"I always love batting with Davey. This series he's batted beautifully, got that big hundred in the first game and he's looked good in every single way so it's nice to see him leave on a high.<\/p>\n

'We've been mates for so long, he's been such an amazing cricketer for Australia it's nice for him to go out on his own terms in front of his home crowd and family.<\/p>\n

"I get emotional even looking at him, watching what he's achieved and seeing what he's done throughout the years and being able to share that with him.<\/p>\n

"We're pretty tight, and especially probably even tighter after he missed a year of cricket."<\/p>\n

Khawaja said he hoped the pair would continue their friendship well into their retirements.<\/p>\n

"Talking about it right now, I think about the journey that we've been on, and he gets quite emotional but it's not the end of our lives," he said.<\/p>\n

Given their personalities, it's perhaps unsurprising he flagged a post-playing career in commentary.<\/p>\n

'Hopefully we've got a lot more times to spend together after we've played cricket – on the golf course, or commentating or whatever it might be.<\/p>\n
