A\ufeffussie<\/a> great Wally Masur<\/a> was full of praise for Alex de Minaur<\/a> following his stunning straight-sets win over Novak Djokovic<\/a> in the United Cup.<\/p>\n

The result marked de Minaur's first-ever victory over a player ranked world No.1 while doubling as his first time conquering Djokovic.<\/p>\n

"He just caught fire in that match against Novak," the Stan Sport tennis expert told 2GB's Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"The thing with Alex is he loves representing, he loves playing for Australia.<\/p>\n

\"PERTH,<\/p>\n

"He's got Lleyton [Hewitt] courtside there \u2014 two peas in a pod those two are the way they compete. And he's just gained experience over the last few years, got all sorts of confidence beating some top-five players [and] got some really big wins.<\/p>\n

"I just think he's on the cusp of playing his best tennis and these coming few years we'll see the best of him."<\/p>\n

With de Minaur ranked just outside the top 10 in 12th position, Masur has high hopes for the 24-year-old ahead of the Australian Open later this month.<\/p>\n

"I think the top 10 is a certainty, it's coming, probably sooner rather than later … The quarters or semis [of the Australian Open] are beckoning, he's got a high ranking and will have some protection in the draw," he said.<\/p>\n

"He doesn't mind if it's hot. If it gets hot or ugly he's good under those conditions.<\/p>\n

"He's got some genuine pre-seasons under his belt with off-court training, he's fitter and stronger than in the past."<\/p>\n
