Olympian<\/a> Luke Plapp overcame a chain failure en route to clinching the 2024 elite men's time trial title at the Australian Road Cycling<\/a> Championships on Thursday.\ufeff<\/p>\n

For the second time in two years at the national championships, the 23-year-old from Melbourne had to deal with his chain dropping\ufeff when he encountered the mechanical issue within the first two kilometres.<\/p>\n

But while last year's mishap ruined his race and led to him falling short of the podium, this year saw him switch bikes and conquer the 37.5-kilometre Ballarat course in 46 minutes and 19.54 seconds (46:19.54). He finished 32 seconds ahead of his nearest rival and bagged his second national title in the event.<\/p>\n

Another Olympian in Grace Brown took victory in the elite women's time trial, rocketing through the course in 40:51.30 to grab her fourth national time trial title. The 31-year-old's closest rival finished six seconds behind.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Thursday also played ho\ufeffst to the national para-cycling titles, in which Paralympians Darren Hicks (men C2) and Paige Greco (women C3) were among the winners.<\/p>\n

Plapp, who's hoping to contest the 32.4-kilometre time trial at Paris 2024, explained how Thursday's mechanical issue came about.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Exact same spot as last year, on the very top of the climb on the first lap, I went to change from the little ring back to the big and the chain just didn't come up," Plapp said.<\/p>\n

"Just a bit of bad luck from me, but I think last year I really got over-excited and tried to make up for it and I just wasn't mature enough, and I think I really learned from that.<\/p>\n

"I did get a little bit overwhelmed, but [road directeur sportif Mathew] Hayman on the radio was really cool, calm and collected. And I just trusted the training. We trained a lot without power in case something ever happened."<\/p>\n

Plapp added that he had "so much confidence in the year to come".<\/p>\n

He was a member of the Australian team that secured bronze in the team pursuit at Tokyo 2020, along with Leigh Howard, Alex Porter, Kelland O'Brien and Sam Welsford.<\/p>\n
