Frenchman Adrian Mannarino claimed the opening set of his United Cup<\/a> match against Italy's Lorenzo Sonego 6-4 and was on serve in the second when he suffered a bizarre injury.<\/p>\n

After \ufeffSonego went up 30-0 in the second game and threatened to break serve, Mannarino hit himself with the butt of his racquet, causing his forehead to bleed.<\/p>\n

A trainer had to be called onto the court, eventually triggering a medical\ufeff timeout for France.<\/p>\n

The fact it was self-imposed called into question whether the timeout should have been granted.<\/p>\n

"If [an injury] is self-inflicted, can you have a timeout? You can't injure yourself, can you?" Wally Masur said in commentary for Nine.<\/p>\n

"Let's say you're in a tricky situation, you go, 'Right, I'm going to bash myself with a racquet and get a breather'."<\/p>\n

Mark Philippoussis was equally bemused.<\/p>\n

"Perfect timing at 0-30 … Time to gather himself. Only at the other end, I guess you wouldn't be happy. You finally got 0-30. Now you have to cool off," Philippoussis added.<\/p>\n

Masur then criticised the length of time needed to tend to Mannarino, who only had a small cut.<\/p>\n

"Why has this taken so long? Get one of those little bandaids, the round ones," Masur said.<\/p>\n

"This does not constitute a medical timeout, in my opinion.<\/p>\n

Masur added that it was "not necessary" and took aim at the trainers.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The way the trainers are carrying on, you would think he requires stitches," Masur joked.<\/p>\n
