Australian Open<\/a> hopeful Stefanos Tsitsipas<\/a> has sensationally withdrawn from a singles clash during Tuesday's United Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The men's world No.6 was scheduled to take on Nicolas Jarry during Greece's tie with Chile in Sydney, but opted to allow teenage teammate \ufeffStefanos Sakellaridis to step up to the plate.<\/p>\n

During an interview on the Nine broadcast, Tsitsipas revealed he may need to pull out due to a lingering back injury.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThere are a few chances I might not play, and there are a few chances I might, so I'm kind of 50-50 so far," he said.<\/p>\n

Minutes later, Tsitsipas withdrew from the contest and could now be racing the clock for the grand slam, which kicks off on January 14.<\/p>\n

"I understand the mindset of Stef, he hasn't had the preparation he wants," commentator Mark Philippoussis said on Nine's broadcast.<\/p>\n
