N\ufeffFL<\/a> superstar Russell Wilson has been benched by the Denver Broncos with two games remaining in the season in a huge financial decision by the franchise.<\/p>\n

After some solid patches throughout the year, the veteran quarterback has been part of Denver's recent 1-3 losing stretch, resulting in the side likely falling out of the playoffs race.<\/p>\n

\ufeffA Super Bowl winner and one of the best QB's of the modern era, Wilson has struggled to lift the Broncos after being traded by the Seahawks<\/a> less than two years ago, and has been at loggerheads with coach Sean Payton throughout the year.<\/p>\n

The latest development, which will see back-up Jarrett Stidham line up in the playmaking role for the last fortnight of their campaign, could have major ramifications on Wilson's contract.<\/p>\n

According to a report from Bleacher Report, Wilson had been threatened and asked to adjust his contract by the club, leading to a breakdown and his benching for their upcoming fixtures.<\/p>\n

Wilson is expected to be cut but holds a clause in his multi-year deal with the Broncos that prevented the franchise from cutting him whilst injured or recovering, with his axing eliminating the risk of the quarterback succumbing to an injury.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe 35-year-old is owed a guaranteed amount from the Broncos for 2024 regardless of whether or not he is cut by the club – but if he were to remain in the Mile High City lineup and suffer an injury, his total guarantee would rise if he was cut before March.<\/p>\n

If Wilson remains \ufeffat the Broncos until June and they release him after that, they would owe the former Seattle star the highest 'dead money' amount of $111 million AUD in the league's history.<\/p>\n
