E\ufeffxiled all-rounder Cameron Green<\/a>could be thrust into a new role later this summer, with former Test opener backing the rising star to take over from David Warner<\/a>in the Australian lineup.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old was overlooked for the first Test against Pakistan last week, with selectors sticking solid with Mitchell Marsh<\/a> following his impressive performance in The Ashes.<\/p>\n

Green remains in the squad for the Aussies, but isn't expected to feature in the remaining two clashes of the series in Melbourne and Sydney, with the hosts dominating their opponents in Perth.<\/a><\/p>\n

However, according to one of country's most successful openers of the modern era, Simon Katich, the talented West Australian has all the tools to replace the departing Warner in 2024.<\/p>\n

"I've just felt that Cameron Green is suited to that role," he told SEN Radio on Friday.<\/p>\n

"He is a superior player to the other three genuine openers in [Cameron] Bancroft, [Matt] Renshaw and [Marcus Harris] Harris.<\/p>\n

"Green is a Test player and I like what he brings to the group. He can bowl 140km\/h and he is a gun catcher as well.<\/p>\n

"He's still only 24 and his first class average is over 46.<\/p>\n

"He's got great upside and I think moving him up the order is better for him than batting at six. He can adapt and do it."<\/p>\n

Green is still widely-regarded as Australia's best young talents, with his early time in the Test arena returning solid results, averaging in the mid-30s with both bat and ball.<\/p>\n

While he has very little experience opening the batting at Shield level, Green possesses the necessary temperament and gear-shifting ability to partner Usman Khawaja.<\/p>\n
