J\ufeffames Magnussen<\/a> has ripped into Swimming Australia over what he considers an inability to promote the sport, blasting the organisation for urging its athletes to "play it down" during interviews.<\/p>\n

With the upcoming Paris 2024<\/a> looming for swimmers across the globe, Magnussen was involved in a discussion on SEN radio on Thursday regarding the approach from the governing body.<\/p>\n

The three-time Olympic medallist claimed Swimming Australia \ufeffpressured him into hiding his emotions in the lead-up to and fallout from major races, which included triumphs in the Commonwealth Games and World Championships during his career in the pool.<\/p>\n

"Whenever I was interviewed, I always wanted to give a headline. If you're asking good and considered questions, I will give you your front page," Magnussen said.<\/p>\n

"You know who hated the interviews I gave? Swimming Australia. [It] would tell us to talk it down … play it down and lower the expectations.<\/p>\n

"I would listen to other swimmers who spoke like that and it was so boring. Swimming suffers from it so badly because the sport struggles so much to get headlines. Every time before we did an interview, [the media managers] would tell us not to talk about the competition. I find it disingenuous and hard to watch sometimes."<\/p>\n

Magnussen – who missed out on a coveted gold medal at London 2012 – has transitioned into media work since retiring and is well placed to comment on promotion, having spent time on both sides of the equation.<\/p>\n

The comments come as Australia prepares for a massive six months prior to the Olympics, with the likes of Emma McKeon, Ariarne Titmus, Kaylee McKeown and Cameron McEvoy rated as top chances in their respective events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
