T\ufeffhe rich got even richer on Tuesday night, with Australian captain Pat Cummins<\/a> earning a mega payday at the IPL auction with Sunrisers Hyderabad – but there are still some question marks over the franchise's decision.<\/p>\n

The right-arm quick went for an enormous \ufeff$3.67 million AUD at the auction<\/a>, making him one of the highest-paid players in the competition's storied history.<\/p>\n

Cummins had spent his most recent three seasons in the league representing the Kolkata Knight Riders, \ufeffbut will now link up with Test teammate Travis Head at another powerhouse franchise, as well as Australian assistant coach Dan Vettori.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old was universally congratulated for securing the blockbuster contract, but according to former Aussie quick and current Adelaide Strikers coach Jason Gillespie<\/a>, the price might not match Cummins' exploits in the shortest form of the game.<\/p>\n

"Pat's obviously a quality bowler and a quality leader, we've seen that … I just don't think T20 is his best format," he told SEN Radio.<\/p>\n

"I think he's a Test bowler, personally. I think Test cricket is his absolute bread and butter.<\/p>\n

"He's a good T20 bowler, make no mistake – but that's massive overs for me."<\/p>\n

Cummins has a solid overall record in T20 internationals, taking 55 wickets in 50 appearances at an average of 24.54 and economy of 7.37, while also possessing a similar output in domestic or franchise competitions.<\/p>\n

At the time of his move to the Sunrisers, Cummins had received the \ufeffhighest bid in IPL history, but he was ultimately knocked off his perch on the same night by Mitchell Starc, who has long been seen as Australia's supreme white-ball seamer.<\/p>\n

Starc will receive $4.42 million after joining Kolkata<\/a> and will line up in the IPL for the first time in over eight years when the season kicks off in March. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"I think he's a great buy," Gillespie said.<\/p>\n

"It's a lot of money, we all acknowledge that, but the IPL is a very rich tournament \u2026 I'm absolutely delighted for Mitch.<\/p>\n

"I think it just highlights how important teams value left-arm fast bowling and left-arm swing bowling at pace."<\/p>\n
