A hunt is on for the next Anna Meares<\/a> or Logan Martin and\ufeff a lounge room video workout could strike gold.<\/p>\n

The governing body of Australian cycling<\/a> announced on Wednesday it had partnered with \ufeffZwift, an American cycling and running game in which the user trains or competes in a virtual world.<\/p>\n

AusCycling has a host of Olympic gold medallists in cycling, including track legend Meares and BMX freestyle ace Martin, and is hoping to\ufeff unearth future champions through the partnership with Zwift in any of the sport's Olympic or Paralympic events: track, road, BMX freestyle, BMX racing or mountain biking.<\/p>\n

"This ultra-accessible model offers multiple ways for candidates to participate," an AusCycling statement said.<\/p>\n

"As well as testing at home, they can also take part at one of AusCycling's in-person events, or by contacting AusCycling to host a testing day in their town or city.<\/p>\n

"Candidates who hit benchmarks will proceed to further testing, with successful participants offered a\u202fdevelopment opportunity with AusCycling."<\/p>\n

AusCycling director of pathways\ufeff Donna Rae-Szalinski underscored the importance of talent identification.<\/p>\n

"We know that a strong talent pool is the key to success on the international stage, and as we look toward the 2028 and 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we want to develop the next generation of elite cyclists and riders with the potential to go all the way," Rae-Szalinski said.<\/p>\n

"This new talent ID program aims to identify and increase talent depth across all disciplines by expanding our search to those who may have never before ridden a bike competitively. By testing candidates virtually and at event hubs we are able to tap into talent we may not have previously had access to."<\/p>\n

Australia won three medals, including one gold medal, at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, with Martin coming up trumps in the men's park, Rohan Dennis taking out the men's individual time trial and Australia clinching victory in the men's team pursuit. Leigh Howard, Alexander Porter, Lucas Plapp, Kelland O'Brien and Sam Welsford formed Australia's men's pursuit team.<\/p>\n

At the Tokyo Paralympics of 2021, gold medals were won by Australia's Darren Hicks (men's time trial C2), Paige Greco (women's individual pursuit C1-3), Emily Petricola (women's individual pursuit C4) and Amanda Reid (womens 500m time trial C1-3).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
