In a strange set of circumstances, Shane van Gisbergen<\/a> will be required to contest a fourth-division race before he makes his NASCAR<\/a> Xfinity Series debut at Daytona.<\/p>\n

The three-time Supercars<\/a> champion has been entered in the season opener of the ARCA Menards Series.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The category is effectively the fourth tier on the NASCAR ladder behind the top-flight Cup Series, Xfinity Series, and Craftsman Truck Series.<\/p>\n

Despite having won the Bathurst 1000<\/a> before and having raced at Daytona International Speedway (albeit on its road course configuration) the Kiwi will have to prove he can foot it on a high-speed oval.<\/p>\n

Speaking with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, van Gisbergen's new boss Ty Norris of Trackhouse Racing confirmed the plans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We're in the process of getting (van Gisbergen) in the ARCA race for Daytona," said Norris.<\/p>\n

"There's a (pre-race practice) in January and the Xfinity Series has a pretty lengthy practice, so there's a lot of opportunities to be observed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"That'll lead to an approval for Daytona and once he's approved at Daytona, we'll be able to go to any track on the circuit."<\/p>\n

Van Gisbergen has just one NASCAR start to his name on an oval in the Craftsman Truck Series.<\/p>\n

He finished 19th on the short 1.1km long Indianapolis Raceway Park, just a lap down on the eventual race winner Ty Majeski.<\/p>\n

Exactly who van Gisbergen will race for in the Menards Series is unclear.<\/p>\n

It's been confirmed he'll compete for Kaulig Racing in the Xfinity Series full-time<\/a> and will also make a minimum of six appearances in the Cup Series.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
