Rugby Australia<\/a> CEO Phil Waugh won't rule out Michael Cheika<\/a> as an option to coach the Wallabies<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n

Since Eddie Jones<\/a> parted company, the head coach role has remained vacant and looks set to stay that way into the new year.<\/p>\n

The sport's governing body wants to finalise its high-performance director before it begins its search in earnest for a new Wallabies spearhead.<\/p>\n

Former Ireland head coach and All Blacks assistant Joe Schmidt has been linked to the spot amid rumours World Rugby's Peter Horne will take that high-performance role.<\/p>\n

"Everyone's in the hunt, to be fair," Waugh told AAP when asked about a shock Cheika return.<\/p>\n

"We haven't gone to market with it yet.<\/p>\n

"We're hoping to announce our high-performance director this week and then get in the process of going to market for a head coach.<\/p>\n

"We're certainly not advanced in conversations, or in any conversations with anyone really."<\/p>\n

Cheika enjoyed four years with the Wallabies between 2015 and 2019 before joining Los Pumas in Argentina as an assistant and then as head coach.<\/p>\n

Cheika took Australia to the 2015 Rugby World Cup final, which they lost 34-17 to New Zealand in England.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday it was confirmed Cheika's contract with Argentina's national team wouldn't be renewed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Instead, his assistant Felipe Contepomi will take the reins in 2024.<\/p>\n

Asked specifically about Cheika as an option, Waugh kept the door wide open for a return.<\/p>\n
