NBA<\/a> star Anthony Edwards has retracted text messages that he allegedly sent to a woman which appear to show him urging her to undergo an abortion.<\/p>\n

Edwards issued a statement on his personal Twitter account after messages between him and the woman surfaced on social media.<\/p>\n

"I made comments in the heat of a moment that are not me, and that are not aligned with what I believe and who I want to be as a man," Edwards wrote on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

"All women should be supported and empowered to make their own decisions about their bodies and what is best for them. I am handling my personal matters privately and will not be commenting on them any further at this time."<\/p>\n

The leaked text messages, which were originally posted as screenshots to Instagram, appear to show a record of Edwards allegedly transferring the woman over $148,000 to terminate her pregnancy.<\/p>\n

Edwards' NBA team, the Minnesota Timberwolves<\/a>, are yet to address the situation publicly.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old was \ufeffcited for third-degree assault by Denver police in April<\/a> after the Timberwolves' season-ending 112-109 loss to the Nuggets.<\/p>\n

According to the report received by Denver police, Edwards was walking off the court to the locker room after missing the tying three-point attempt at the final buzzer before allegedly swinging a folding chair and striking two female stadium employees.<\/p>\n

Edwards was selected by the Timberwolves with the No.1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and made his first All-Star appearance last season.<\/p>\n

He has played 22 games for Minnesota this season and was permitted to play in the Timberwolves' 108-112 win over the Heat on Tuesday despite the social media scandal.<\/p>\n
