Former Australian Test captain\ufeff Tim Paine<\/a> believes Nathan Lyon<\/a> can join Shane Warne<\/a> as the only other Australian cricketer to reach 700 Test wickets.<\/p>\n

Having notched \ufeff501 Test wickets<\/a> after claiming five in Australia's 360-run win in the first Test against Pakistan<\/a>, Lyon became just the third Australian to pass the magical mark in Test cricket, joining Warne (708) and Glenn McGrath (563).<\/p>\n

A former teammate of Lyon's who had a front-row seat to the finger spinner behind the stumps, Paine could not bring to mind any emerging talent that would be ready to replace Lyon in the Test side in the near future.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Paine also could not see Lyon's motivation to play at the top level tailing off despite a calf injury spoiling his Ashes series<\/a> and causing him to reflect on his desire to play for Australia.<\/p>\n

"I know he's pretty driven to keep playing, I can't see anyone who's going to take his position \u2026 We haven't got the stocks," he said on SEN's Tassie Breakfast<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I can see him challenging 700.<\/p>\n

"It might sound ridiculous [but] he's spoken about playing in another Ashes series, he's spoken about trying to go to India again, so that's a couple of years at least."<\/p>\n

Lyon became just the eighth player in Test history to pass the 500-wicket mark, joining Muttiah Muralitharan, Warne, Jimmy Anderson, Anil Kumble, Stuart Broad, McGrath and Courtney Walsh.<\/p>\n

"What a player \u2026 [The] bloke started as a groundsman at the Adelaide Oval \u2026 and has turned out to be the third Test player that ever played for Australia to get 500 wickets, the eighth person ever in Test cricket to go above 500 wickets," Paine said.<\/p>\n

"To be invited to bowl to the South Australians in the nets and then to be the third highest wicket-taker in Australia is an incredible story."<\/p>\n

Paine echoed Australian skipper Pat Cummins' call that Lyon could finish his career with even more wickets than \ufeffWarne.<\/p>\n

"He knows exactly which person \ufeffhe ticks off every time," Cummins said post-match with a grin.<\/p>\n

Lyon could achieve the feat of 700 career Test wickets but to do so, he would need to take an average of 20 wickets a series over 10 more campaigns.<\/p>\n

Barring injuries or any other disruptions to his career, the 36-year-old could tick these off over two to three more years.<\/p>\n

Lyon will look to add to his count during the upcoming Boxing Day Test which kicks off on Tuesday, December 26 at the MCG.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
