Sonny Bill Williams<\/a> has labelled Wallabies<\/a> winger Mark Nawaqanitawase's defection from union to league "sad" \u2013 pinning the blame firmly on Eddie Jones<\/a> and Hamish McLennan.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nawaqanitawase has one year left on his Rugby Australia<\/a> contract before he crosses codes where he'll play for the Sydney Roosters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It'll mean he misses the upcoming British & Irish Lions Series on home soil, although he may yet be available for the 2027 Rugby World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The NSW Waratahs<\/a> winger had been touted as a star of the future for the Wallabies, becoming a staple in the squad since his debut.<\/p>\n

Speaking with Wide World of Sports, Williams lamented Nawaqanitawase's decision which he believes was driven by the former head coach and ex-chairman.<\/p>\n

"I just thought that was sad," said the All Blacks legend.<\/p>\n

"I thought that was just a reflection of the Jones, McLennan era. \u2013 what I saw.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"How can we have arguably the best player on tour and only in his early 20s jump ship? It should be the time of your life.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Unless he's going through some mental health issues and all of that \u2013 but obviously, he isn't \u2013 how can that occur? You should be loving the environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"That was a reflection of that. That's what I believe."<\/p>\n

There is light at the end of the tunnel though, Williams reckons.<\/p>\n

Although Nawaqanitawase may be on his way out the door, there are others like him waiting to be picked up and fed into the system towards stardom.<\/p>\n

"I'm telling you, there are a lot of that Nawaqanitawases out in Western Sydney," said Williams.<\/p>\n

"There are a lot of these players that we need to find in Australia. When you say, 'Oh, are we fearful of losing these top players?' You get the system right? Players come, players go \u2013 hold on to the ones that you need to hold on to.<\/p>\n

"You don't overly stress on the fact that there's no talent coming through because it's there you just need some strategies and pathways put in place where we can see and start seeing some of those players come through."<\/p>\n

Nawaqanitawase will play for the NSW Waratahs in Super Rugby Pacific in 2024 before moving to the Sydney Roosters in 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
