Oscar Piastri<\/a> is quietly confident Red Bull's<\/a> reign over Formula 1<\/a> will be somewhat stifled in 2024.<\/p>\n

The McLaren<\/a> racer was one of a handful to beat Max Verstappen<\/a> this year, albeit in a sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That marked the moment the F1 rookie knew his team was capable of being regular contenders.<\/p>\n

"I think we will have hopefully more than one opportunity to fight for a win," said Piastri when asked by the official F1 website to make a bold prediction ahead of the new season.<\/p>\n

"That's certainly what I hope."<\/p>\n

His British teammate Lando Norris has been outspoken about the team's potential.<\/p>\n

This year, the team wound up fourth in the constructors' championship, a little more than 100 points behind Mercedes and Ferrari respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That marked a significant step forward on 2022, where McLaren were only fifth and significantly off the pace relative to Ferrari, Mercedes, and even Alpine.<\/p>\n

For Piastri, seeing his teammate buoyed by what's to come in 2024 has him riding that wave of optimism.<\/p>\n

"I think for Lando to be confident is quite a big statement," said Piastri.<\/p>\n

"He's obviously been with the team a lot longer and seen sort of the fluctuations that that every team inevitably goes through.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Charles<\/p>\n

"The biggest confidence for me is that everything we put on the car this year has worked. All the upgrades did exactly what we wanted them to do.<\/p>\n

"The direction we've been going in has been working and that's a very comfortable place to be in going into a new season, especially with stable rules and regulations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We know that Red Bull are gonna be strong again. It's going to be interesting to see what the other teams around us are gonna be like next year, but I think we can be comfortable that the way we're working is the right direction.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"If we keep going that way and do it better than the others, then it's pretty exciting to think what the possibilities could be."<\/p>\n

Piastri wound up 2023 by winning the rookie of the year titles by the FIA and Autosport.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It marked the best debut year for any F1 driver since Lewis Hamilton in 2007, who was a regular race winner and title contender with McLaren then.<\/p>\n

With a season under his belt, Piastri is hopeful he can continue building towards more success and eventually a grand prix win.<\/p>\n

"Obviously, we've ended 2023 in quite a good place with a competitive car," he explained.<\/p>\n

"Hopefully we can be the same, if not better. That's the goal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I think for myself, I've got a year of experience in Formula 1. I've been to all of the circuits, apart from China, so there won't be any completely new ones for me.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Hopefully everything will just be a bit more comfortable, a bit more natural from the start. Just keep doing the same thing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"If that means we're finishing on the podium or even winning, then that's of course what I'm gonna try and aim for. If it means we're finishing sixth or seventh, then that's what I'm gonna try and aim for \u2013 so just try and keep building, keep evolving.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I've got some clear targets that I wanna try and improve from my first season. Just keep try chipping away at those and wherever we end up is where we end up."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
