With confirmation that Los Pumas have a new head coach, Michael Cheika<\/a> is now a free agent.<\/p>\n

Argentina's governing body (UAR) announced on Tuesday that its former flyhalf Felipe Contepomi would take the helm.<\/p>\n

Contepomi was capped 87 times for the national team and served as Cheika's assistant coach.<\/p>\n

Following meetings between the UAR and Cheika, it was agreed that Contepomi would be best suited for the job.<\/p>\n

It means Cheika's tenure ends after just two years. In that time, he took them to 11 wins and 13 losses.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Two of his greatest achievements included defeating the All Blacks in New Zealand and taking Argentina to a Rugby World Cup semi-final in France.<\/p>\n

Argentina fell just shy of taking third in this year's tournament after a narrow defeat to England.<\/p>\n

"I want to thank all the Argentines for these wonderful years together, as well as the UAR, the staff and the players for having trusted me for this challenge," said Cheika.<\/p>\n

"Having been the head coach of Los Pumas fills me with pride, and it is one of the experiences that I enjoyed the most in my career as a coach.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Although I was born in Australia, a big part of me will be Argentina. I am convinced that Felipe and his staff are going to lead the team in the best way."<\/p>\n

Cheika's successor hailed his tenure with the team.<\/p>\n

"I had the honour of working with Michael Cheika in the consolidation of a sporting project, which challenges and excites us as part of a great Argentine team," Contepomi said.<\/p>\n

"For that reason, I am grateful for the extraordinary opportunity that the UAR gives me to continue working towards the cherished goal of the 2027 World Cup in Australia."<\/p>\n

What lies ahead for Cheika remains to be seen.<\/p>\n
