A\ufeffustralian cricketing icon Mark Taylor<\/a> has heaped praise on veteran spin bowler Nathan Lyon<\/a> as he edges closer to his 500th Test wicket, saying his side is "lucky" to have him in the mix.<\/p>\n

Lyon took 3-66 in Pakistan's first innings in Perth<\/a>, leaving him stranded on 499 career Test wickets heading into day four of play.<\/p>\n

Australia's greatest-ever off-spinner and third all-time wicket taker \ufefflooked a chance to reach the milestone on day three. Having got rid of Abdullah Shafique on Friday evening, he and Alex Carey combined to remove both Imam ul-Haq and Aamir Jamal stumped.<\/p>\n

Taylor believes Lyon's Saturday showing "typifies" his skill, and indeed his role in the Australian side.<\/p>\n

"He's a beautiful mix in amongst three very good fast bowlers. That's what he is," Taylor told Wide World of Sports on Saturday.<\/p>\n

"He gives Australia a lovely point of difference, a change of pace. He's not a defensive off-spinner who just looks to keep things quiet. He's looking\ufeff to get wickets. And as we've seen, that's what wins you Test matches."<\/p>\n

Unlike Australia's fast bowlers, whose job is to create chaos with ball in hand, Taylor says Lyon brings a different angle to the pitch, which he uses to attack in his own unique manner.<\/p>\n

"He didn't take five or six (wickets), but he got three wickets. Three crucial wickets for Australia and makes breakthroughs," Taylor said.<\/p>\n

"That's what you really hope from your spin bowler. Yes he will keep it quiet in one aspect, but also he'll get you those important wickets that will make a difference\ufeff.<\/p>\n

\"Nathan<\/p>\n

"Like Iman ul-Haq today. Beautiful piece of bowling where he spun one past the edge and got him stumped. Those things change the game."<\/p>\n

Australia heads into day four of the first Test with a 300-run lead and eight wickets in hand, after David Warner fell for a duck<\/a>, and Marnus Labuschagne for only two.<\/p>\n

But Taylor says when Australia have reached a respectable total, Lyon will be there to create his own kind of chaos with ball in hand.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"That's where Australia are very lucky at the moment, they've got three fast bowlers and they've got Nathan Lyon as a beautiful mix in their bowling attack\ufeff," he said.<\/p>\n
