Mitchell Marsh<\/a> gave a resolute answer when asked if he was gunning for the role as Aussie opener once David Warner<\/a> retires.<\/p>\n

"Absolutely not, so there you go," he said after play on Friday night.<\/p>\n

Marsh made 90 in Australia<\/a>'s first innings against Pakistan before he was bowled first ball after the lunch break.<\/a><\/p>\n

The topic of who will eventually replace Warner, who will retire after the New Years' Sydney Test, has been a hot one for months, with Marsh's name thrown up as a candidate to move up the order to partner Usman Khawaja.<\/p>\n

Despite having the top order pedigree in white ball cricket, where he has opened and batted at No.3, Marsh said moving up the order at the Test level "doesn't make sense".<\/p>\n

"I appreciate there's talk about it and eventually we're going to need a new opener with Davey leaving," he said.<\/p>\n

"I've worked really hard to get back in this side, and for me to look forward to having a role as an opener just doesn't make sense to me.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I love batting at number six and I guess in my last four Test matches I've really found my way and who I am as a Test cricketer and I'm loving it, so I'm reluctant to change that."<\/p>\n

Marsh is in the Test side as an all-rounder having shot back into form during the World Cup in India. He made 177 not out in Australia's final pool game against Bangladesh.<\/p>\n

Marsh said batting at six gave him the freedom to play his own game, having earlier tried to emulate the slow accumulation styles of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne.<\/p>\n

"I think I've shown glimpses of the way I've played in the past 12 months throughout my career, but probably never really believed in that method," he said.<\/p>\n

"I've tried to play the long innings and play like Steve Smith and Davey and Uzzie and all those guys that can bat for six hours.<\/p>\n

"I guess I just wanted to come back into this Test team and be really true to myself … I've sort of found my method that works.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I don't necessarily have the technique of Smudge (Smith) and Marnus where they can defend and leave and defend and leave for hours and sort of get through those periods.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I know that when I show really good intent, I move better and I can defend good balls (and) ultimately put pressure back onto other teams.<\/p>\n

"The beauty of batting at six is hopefully if we bat well, we get some tired bowlers to try to counterattack and keep the game moving forward.<\/p>\n

"I've got a really clear role that allows me to be myself."<\/p>\n

Marsh broke the hearts of local fans when he was clean bowled first ball after lunch by Khurram Shahzad on day two.<\/p>\n

He suggested that dismissal epitomised his role in the team \u2013 play aggressively, but it comes with a risk.<\/p>\n

"It's a fine line," he said.<\/p>\n

"I thought it was a pretty good ball, although I tried to hit it out of the stadium.\u00a0<\/p>\n
