The AFL<\/a> will make a rule change in 2024 i\ufeffn response to Collingwood<\/a> premiership player Brayden Maynard's controversial bump on Melbourne midfielder Angus Brayshaw<\/a> in the 2023 qualifying final.<\/p>\n

If a player decides to smother and ends up contacting a player high, the league has confirmed it will suspend players, irrespective of their intention during the incident.<\/p>\n

Maynard was cleared of any wrongdoing<\/a> and spared a season-ending suspension after an attempt to smother left Brayshaw unconscious for several minutes during the Magpies' seven-point qualifying final victory, which eventually saw his side go on to win the grand final.<\/p>\n

However, if Maynard was to repeat that act next year, he would face a lengthy ban, with all 18 clubs receiving a directive about it on Thursday, according to the Herald Sun.<\/a><\/p>\n

The rule change is aimed to remove confusion surrounding intention of contact.<\/p>\n

As of next season, Maynard's bump would be ruled as \ufeff"careless conduct as part of a rough conduct charge unless players are shown to be "adopting a body position that minimises the force of the contact", according to the Herald Sun.<\/p>\n

The AFL hopes to \ufefftake a stronger stance on head protection, meaning that players who lay bumps like Maynard's will need to adjust their body position to reduce contact on their opposition player.<\/p>\n

The league is also looking to ban players from wearing gloves on field (unless for medical reasons) and upgrade off-ball contact (pushes, punches) from carless to intentional contact.<\/p>\n

Additionally, \ufeffformer Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley<\/a> has backed a Victorian coroner's call for clubs to reduce the number of full contact training sessions, saying it is "achievable".<\/p>\n

State Coroner John Cain recommended the change<\/a> after investigating the death of former Richmond player Shane Tuck, who was revealed to have \ufeffsevere chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) at the time of his death<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n

Buckley, who coached Collingwood between \ufeff2012 and 2021, said St Kilda coach Ross Lyon had already reduced the amount of contact drills at the club.<\/p>\n

Cain also recommended the AFL employ independent medical practitioners at all games, with the practitioners given the power to remove players from the field for a medical assessment at any time.
