Eddie Jones<\/a> has apologised to Australian rugby fans in a press conference to officially announce his new role as head coach<\/a> of Japan<\/a>, but denied he conducted an interview for the role in August.<\/p>\n

Jones took over as coach of the Wallabies<\/a> before the World Cup<\/a>, where they failed to make it out of the group stage, before unceremoniously quitting without seeing through his contracted period.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"(I) apologise to Australian \ufefffans, yes, I gave everything I could for that short period of time and it wasn't good enough," he said at a press conference on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

"I had a plan of what we needed to do to change Australian rugby and we weren't able to do that, Rugby Australia weren't able to help support that, so I decided to move on and I wish Australia all the best.<\/p>\n

"I feel terrible about the results of Australia because I wanted to go back and change Australia, so I feel terrible, but I don't feel any guilt about this process."<\/p>\n

A report from The Sydney Morning Herald<\/em><\/a> \ufeffin September stated Jones had held an interview with the Japanese Rugby Football Union days before the World Cup started.<\/p>\n

The newspaper suggested Jones applied for the role and took part in a Zoom interview on August 25.<\/p>\n

When asked at the press conference on Thursday night, Jones denied he was interviewed until December.<\/p>\n

"I didn't do an interview before the World Cup, I was asked by the recruitment agency to share my experiences with them on Japan," he said.<\/p>\n

"Some people might have misconstrued that as an interview, it certainly wasn't an interview.<\/p>\n

"The first interview I had with Japan was in December and that's the only interview I've had."<\/p>\n

Pressed further as to whether Australian rugby fans would believe him, Jones rejected the report again. <\/p>\n

"I'm not sure what they need to believe but all I can say is I go back that the first interview I had with Japan was in December," he said.<\/p>\n

JFRU chairman Kensuke Iwabuchi then interjected to re-enforce that a third party had been involved after discussing the process the previous day.<\/p>\n

"I just confirmed yes there was a conversation between a recruiting company and Eddie Jones \ufeff… because they wanted to ask him about the knowledge he had about Japan, so he was a source to search for the best possible candidate for us so that's why they contacted him," he said.<\/p>\n

"That's what I confirmed yesterday."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Iwabuchi was then asked by the Herald<\/em> why the Zoom interview was labelled "first round interview", to which he denied knowledge about.<\/p>\n

"I don't know what you're talking about because I told you we had a conversation with Eddie Jones and a recruiting company to search for the best possible candidate \ufeffto get the information," Iwabuchi said.<\/p>\n

During a press conference at Coogee Oval in October<\/a>, Jones stated he wasn't aware of any contract with any third parties or recruitment agencies regarding the Japan role.<\/p>\n

Jones has copped criticism for his departure from the Wallabies and the quick turnaround in landing the Japan role.<\/p>\n

World Cup winning All Black Sonny Bill Williams<\/a> said Jones was "full of crap" after denying he'd conducted the original interview with Japan numerous times.<\/p>\n

"I actually feel sorry for Japan that they believe this guy is gonna take them somewhere where his track record shows that he hasn't been able to do," Williams told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"It seems like he's a little bit out of touch with what's going on.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Jones said the process behind the decision "sits well with me".<\/p>\n

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I can't control their opinion," he said.<\/p>\n

"The only thing I can control is what I did and it sits well with me. I don't have a problem with it. If people feel like that's their judgement, I can't control that."<\/p>\n

Jones previously coached Japan from 2012 to 2015\ufeff. His first national head coaching role prior to that was with the Wallabies in 2001, and ended in 2005.<\/p>\n
